See Jenny Shop: Um, I think I like Walgreens!

I haven’t posted about my drugstore deals in far too long. Mostly because I haven’t been too over-the-top thrilled with them.  But I have a confession to make: recently I’ve been shopping more and more at Walgreens. Shocking, right? I used to feel like their register rewards were too inconsistent to really make it worth my time.  But within the past few months, they’ve gotten on the loyalty card train and now have a “Balance Rewards” program. So in addition to register rewards items, now you can also earn Balance Rewards points on your card for buying certain things. When you get to 5,000 points, you can redeem them for $5 off your purchase. I was skeptical at first, but twice reached the 5,000 point mark  pretty quickly without really even trying. Then, after the deal I got this week on the products above, I was sold! Here’s what I got.

Transaction #1:

3 Splenda $2.99 each with in-ad coupon = $8.97

iChill sleep remedy $4.99

total = $13.66

coupons -$3 (three $1 off Splenda printables)

total = $10.66 + tax and I got back $10 in Register Rewards! $5 for the Splenda and $5 for the iChill.

So then I bought:

Two Viva 6-packs (my favorite paper towel ever!!) $5.99 each = $11.98

One clearance pocket folder 54 cents (filler item. I had more coupons than I had items so I had to throw that in. Something I still don’t enjoy about Walgreens.)

One Thermacare cold pack $7.99.

total = $20.51

coupons:

-$2 ($1 off Viva Walgreens monthly saving book coupon, took $1 off each pack)

-$3 Viva coupon I got in a Kroger mailer but coupon can be used anywhere 🙂

-$3 Thermacare coupon from RedPlum insert

-$5 Register Reward from previous purchase.

Total = $7.51 and I got 2,000 balance reward points (aka $2) loaded to my card for the Thermacare and a $3 Register Reward for the Viva.

So I walked out of Walgreens with all that product and $8 in Register Rewards and another 2,000 points on my card! I was pretty happy! If Walgreens keeps having deals like this, we will be very happy together in the future!

That’s what I got at the drugstore last week – how about you??

No, YOU’RE a hoarder!

I mentioned awhile back that thanks to the TV show “Extreme Couponing” and well, let’s face it, blogs and the internet, it is now hard out there for a pimp a lot more difficult to get good coupon deals at the drug and grocery stores. This week I went to CVS, Walgreens, AND Rite Aid just to get some good deals on things we need – but that is not exactly convenient! I rarely ever do that, though, so I let it slide.  And I’ve been alternating between ALDI and Kroger (even though they took away double coupons which I’m still mad about!!!), because there are things that are unique to both stores that we use a lot as a family. I’m still spending more than I’d like, but lack of coupons is not the only big factor in the inflation of the Rapson family grocery budget. The other big factor?

THIS GUY!

jonah yogurt

This child eats more every day than his big siblings combined. I typically have to go buy bananas and grapes for him twice a week, since bananas go bad quickly, I can’t buy enough for the whole week in one sitting. It’s crazy! When Joshua and Sophie were toddlers, they both ate barely enough to stay alive. Jonah eats enough for about four grown men. Keep in mind that he is also on a gluten-free diet, so I have to get creative with his snacks. Dried cherries, Pirate’s Booty rice puffs, and raisins are his current faves. The dried fruit can be really pricey! (I get the cherries at ALDI).

Besides snacks, Jonah’s three favorite foods are grapes, bananas, and yogurt. He eats yogurt for breakfast every day since he can’t have wheat or oats, and he usually eats two cups.  And he also usually has a cup for snack after his nap. Plus, the big kids like yogurt a lot also. So I am constantly on the hunt for yogurt that is on sale. That is why, after the last Kroger Mega-Event, I had about 20 boxes of go-gurt in my fridge. It is also why I went to our local Kroghetto yesterday in search of a “Manager’s special” deal on yogurt – praying for markdowns because nothing was on sale! And oh, how my prayers were answered!

Got yogurt?

WHAT?? It’s perfectly normal for someone to purchase 53 cups of yogurt in ONE shopping trip! You’re just JEALOUS!! (I was especially excited about all the Chobani! I love it and so does Jonah. P.S. the coffee-flavored Chobani is for Bobby and me.)

So there ya go. I’m that crazy person getting weird looks from all the people at Kroghetto who shop in their pajama pants – and the sad part is – I DID leave some on the shelves, and I really want to go back and buy them! But I’m controlling myself…and besides, some other savvy shopper who scours the ghetto grocery for markdowns probably got them by now, anyway. *Sigh*.

These are the lengths I will go to to keep my family fed for less! Desperate times call for desperate measures…but you can’t accuse me of hoarding because we go through the yogurt so fast!

What crazy savings schemes are you into these days?

Gluten-Free food finds at ALDI

ALDIGFcollage3

When I started eating gluten-free in November, it wasn’t because I wanted to. Even though I realize that gluten isn’t technically good for any of us, you can rest assured that had I not developed an allergy to wheat or gluten (I’ve never actually been tested to be sure, all I know is that when I stopped eating wheat, I stopped feeling as if there were bugs crawling all over my body, so – YAY, I’m sticking with no wheat.) I’d still be stuffing my face with gluten-filled donuts, pasta, onion rings, bread, and all that other stuff. But alas, I’m going to have to be g-free for life, apparently. Since Jonah is also on a gluten-free diet, I’m always on the  hunt for good gluten-free snacks and recipe ingredients. I make all of our family dinners gluten-free, although the big kids still eat gluten-filled toast for breakfast, PB sandwiches for lunch, and crackers for snack.

I’ve been shopping at ALDI a couple of times a month for awhile now, so I was interested to see what gluten-free items they had to offer. When I inquired, they told me they didn’t have an official list of gluten-free products. So, I told them I’d like to investigate for myself, and they were all, “Well, that’s awfully nice of you, here’s a $25 gift certificate to help you out with that.” (Which I thought was awfully nice of them.) So while they are not officially sponsoring this post, they did contribute to it in that way. $25 can go a long way at ALDI, but I did spend much more than that on my gluten-free items plus my regular weekly groceries for the fam.

I took off to ALDI sans kiddos one day so I could take my time going through the store reading labels. I found quite a few products beyond the obvious (fruits, vegetables, cheese, etc.) that do not contain gluten. One of my favorites is the Fit & Active Fat free chicken broth. I use chicken broth to cook a lot (and no, I don’t want to make my own, thankyouverymuch) and many brands of chicken broth contain wheat for some reason which is VERY ANNOYING. I even got burned by a brand once that was supposed to be gluten-free, but I had an immediate reaction to it. Hmm…anyways, ALDI’s Fit & Active is priced very nice at $1.49 for the carton and I’ve used it many times and it’s gluten-free! Woot woot! So is their Chef’s Cupboard brand chicken broth AND beef broth. Bonus! I also was pleased that their Priano Alfredo sauce is gluten-free, because that’s another thing you have to watch for gluten in.

After my ALDI trip, I came up with a list of gluten-free items. It is by NO means even close to a complete list, but there are some things (like boxed mashed potatoes, for instance) that I thought might contain gluten that don’t. Woot! Here’s what I came up with:

Chef’s Cupboard Roasted Garlic, Four Cheese, & traditional instant Mashed Potatoes

Priano creamy alfredo sauce

Reggano pasta sauce (all varieties)

Casa Mamita refried beans (traditional and fat-free)

Fit & Active Brown Instant Rice

Chef’s Cupboard Chicken broth & Beef broth

Chef’s Cupboard Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato soup

Dakota’s Homestyle Baked Beans

Millville Rice Squares & Corn Squares cereal

Clancy’s Sweet Potato Chips

Fit & Active All-Natural Fruit Strips (all flavors)

Fit & Active fat-free Chicken Broth

Southern Grove all-natural dried cherries  (Jonah LOVES these) (they have other dried fruits as well but some are packaged in facilities that also process items containing wheat)

Clancy’s Tortilla Chips

Little Salad Bar Hummus (all varieties)

Other things that I don’t want to leave off but are pretty obvious: canned fruits and vegetables, coffee, yogurt, cheese, un-seasoned meats, eggs…you know what I mean. But two notes about these items: 1) I have seen some flavored yogurts at other stores that do contain wheat – generally if they have a mix-in fruit or other kind of topping – so just watch out for that and 2) ALDI’s Beaumont coffee “fair trade” dark roast variety is AMAZINGLY good and only $3.99! =) You gotsta GET SOME. It’s right up there with our favorite brand, Gevalia.

Well, these are the results of my ALDI scavenger hunt for gluten-free items! Did I miss anything obvious, my g-free friends? If you’re a g-free ALDI shopper, I hope this helped you out! Thanks to ALDI for the $25 gift certificate. It went a long way because of their great prices.
