I’m a *little* nervous about posting this!

Because frankly, I’m worried that I won’t do it. But, that is the point of posting it – to get my arse in gear.

Oh, I guess I should tell you what I’m talking about.

This – the Couch to 5K program.

It’s a beginning program for people like me who sit on the couch but would like to run a 5k. It’s a nine week series, and it starts out slow. Which describes my running perfectly. In fact, my husband has been known to say that when I run, I look like I’m jogging in place. Yes, I am that fast.

I am soooo not a runner. I consider myself somewhat athletic, but running has just never come easy to me. But it is a great way to get in shape, and since I haven’t been doing jack lately in the realm of exercise, I am going to give it a go.

I’ve done this program before, and at the conclusion of the program, I did in fact run a 5k. I use the term “run” loosely, but I didn’t walk at all, and that was a serious accomplishment for me. So I know the program works… but it only works if I get off the computer and onto the treadmill. I am hoping to go to the exercise room at work during my lunch hour so I don’t have to do it in the evenings… not to mention that if I exercise during lunch, that means I won’t go out, thereby saving money as well. Sounds like a great plan, right? Yes, until one of my co-workers starts the daily “Who wants to go to lunch?” IM conversation. Right.

I am going to need some help. So last week, after Thanksgiving calories were consumed, I started tweating about Couch to 5K on Twitter, and I am happy to report that I have some Twitter buddies who are going to undertake this craziness with me as well. Shannan from MommyBits and Marcy from Stretching a Buck, and possibly a few others are going to do it as well, so hopefully we can keep each other motivated.

So anyway, that’s my plan. But I think I’ll wait and start Monday.

In other random news, I have been meaning to post this picture for about a month. This is my sister’s friend Sarah at a Halloween party… dressed as a Mommin It Up fan. Isn’t that hilarious?

  1. You go Emily! My husband is training to run a marathon, and he’s motivated me to get into running. I’ve NEVER been a runner–walking? Love it! But I don’t run. I think I just might try this out too!

  2. 5Ks are so much fun!! I’ve run them for a couple years now and am looking forward to 10Ks and a possible HALF-MARATHON in 2009!!! And I’m no speedster either, my 5K PR (presonal Record) is 26:52. BUT get this: One 5K has an Athena category for women 140lbs or more. Not only did I take first, I set a new course record. Woo-Hoo!!

  3. Ooooh! Do it! The Couch-to-5k is great!!! I, unfortunately, have never completed the program, but in the weeks that I did do it (I’ve done it a few times now), I noticed such a huge difference in my running (and in my health!). I felt great!

  4. Way to go! I’ve been trying to follow the Couch to 5K for months now. I get to about week 3 and fall into deep unmotivated state then I start over. I’ve started back at Monday. I’d love to join in with you – I could use the motivation too! I’d like to be able to run the 5k at Wright Patt next year and the Turkey Trot.

  5. I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only slow poke!! Looking forward to the motivation of doing this with you and Shannan! šŸ™‚

  6. Good luck ladies!!! Emily, I was SO NOT a runner either and now I consider myself one (like you a slow jogging runner – it’s still running!!). And, I will be doing something at the Pig if Marianne has anything to do with it!

Let me know when/if you guys do a 5k because I would love to come and run with ya to show my support šŸ™‚

  7. Sister! I have the same plan! I did it last year after Thanksgiving… it’s just so cold. Anywho, what race are you running? Maybe we can do it togeather.

  8. Good for you!! I had never run before, but I did the program in August and ran my first 5k in October. It was a good program and I hope you like it.

  9. I am so excited about this program. I too am a little nervous but I think that knowing I have to report to you and Marcy will keep me honest.
It’s going to be awesome in 2 (or 3) months when we all meet up and run together!

  10. Emily ~ I have always wanted to run a 5k but I am so not a good runner. I think this plan sounds real manageable. I am so excited to join the Couch to 5k program!! Let us know your progress. šŸ™‚
