Making the Cut

Jonah in bed
Umm, my three-year-old became a GIANT overnight and started sleeping in a big-boy bed. HOW did this happen?

These past few weeks have been a little crazy in the Rapson house. Since January 9, Jonah’s started preschool, we’ve had like 18 polar vortexes, I’ve had two outpatient surgeries (one oral and one ladypartsish), and we’ve taken Jonah to a dairy-free diet in addition to gluten-free. Because he was having ALL sorts of trouble with his poops, poor kid. But I won’t go into that because Emily would totally remove my admin privileges from this blog. AND, to top it off, we’ve moved him to a big boy bed this week.

So anyway, what I am saying is – there’s been a lot of change/deviation from routine for our family, especially for a three-year-old.

And as I wrote earlier, he’s been adjusting to all this change by being pretty crabby at home. And he’s three. You know, the age at which the Terrible Two’s take some crack cocaine and the kind of steroids that induce rage and have a party for a year. So I should probably cut the kid some slack.

But that cut. It’s one I have a terribly hard time making.

The truth is, I have the equivalent of post-traumatic stress disorder from Sophie’s developmental delays. I attributed some of her delays and behaviors to her being crazy, stubborn, and strong-willed, only to realize rather late that whoops! – she actually did have some social/behavioral delays mixed in there. So from them on, every irregularity was cause for worry. And the truth is, some of it was just her personality. Sophie being Sophie. And some of it wasn’t. And I couldn’t really tell the difference.

Now Jonah is three, and going through some behavioral stuff, which is really not that bad, and probably very understandable, and his overall delays are not even close to what Sophie’s were.

But I can’t relax about it. I worry about every little fuss, every fit, every refusal to communicate what he wants.

I can’t cut him any slack, and I can’t cut myself any slack. I choose to worry. I don’t want to choose it but I do. I don’ t know how not to.

If he has a great day, I have a great day, and if he doesn’t, I don’t.

But overall he is doing so well.

And I am SO proud of him. And I am thankful for that.

I just wish I could rest in it.

The BEST {and worst} Drugstore Mascaras Part TWO!

Best Drugstore Mascara part 2

You’d think after my last Drugstore Mascara Compar-a-palooza post, I’d never need to purchase another mascara ever again. But, you see, they keep making new ones, AND I HAVE A SICKNESS apparently! So since I work the drugstore to get cheap and free makeup, I keep buying them. 🙂 And you? You get reviews on the latest and greatest drugstore mascaras so you know what to buy! Here’s my latest loves and losses! Once again, I am grading them on an A to F scale.

Get your eyelash curlers ready! Here we go!

Flamed_Up_Mascara_1

CoverGirl Flamed Up Mascara

Since I really, really, really liked CoverGirl Flamed OUT mascara, I was all “ooohhhh!” when I saw Flamed Up at the store and I scooped some up immediately. I LIKE it, I really do. It goes on great with little clumping, and stays on beautifully, and provides terrific volume. Do I think it lives up to it’s “mega-curl mascara” claim? Not really. It’s a great mascara but if you’re looking for a mascara to curl your lashes, I’d go elsewhere, or just do what I do, and curl them before hand. Still, it is a great product, so I give it an A-!

Maybelline Volum’ Express The Colossal Mascara

Even though some of the Maybelline mascaras I tried previously weren’t my favorite, I couldn’t help but try more because THERE ARE JUST SO MANY OF THEM!! And, I am glad I did! I love this The Colossal mascara. It gives great length and volume and stays on really well. I really can’t say enough about it. If you are looking for a great straight-off-the-shelf mascara that will make your lashes look great, I highly recommend it. I give it an A!

Maybelline Volum’ Express The Colossal Mascara

Buoyed by my love of the Colossal, I gleefully picked up the Colossal Cat Eyes on sale (with a coupon) soon after. And…major disappointment. I feel like it just basically does nothing when used alone. With it’s curved brush, it does flare lashes pretty well when used as a top coat over another mascara, and that provides a nice effect. But alone, it doesn’t do much – I feel like it’s not the same length-and-volume providing formula of plain old Colossal. Sooo…on it’s own, I give it a C-. As a topcoat, I give it an A – but not sure I’d pay full price for it just to use it as a topcoat.

L’Oreal Paris Voluminous® Butterfly Mascara

Butterfly

Well, I am a sucker for a mascara with a gimmick so I knew I had to have this as soon as it came out! However, like the true cheapskate I am, I waited for it to be on sale and until I had a coupon. It was WORTH THE WAIT! I LOVE it. Love, love, love! It has this crazy brush:

Which takes some getting used to, but WOW does it work. It lengthens, it flares lashes outward, and it gives great volume. AND it stays on. I adore it. I can’t wait to get it in waterproof and another color! It’s grade? A +!

CoverGirl Bombshell Volume by LashBlast

If you saw my video review of this mascara a couple weeks ago, you already know I love it! The two-formula system is genius. I love the fat, short-bristled plastic brush of step 1. It gives great volume with no clumps. The step 2 brush and formula lengthen lashes and had a more intense darkness. My personal formula for Bombshell success is two coats of step 1 and one coat of step 2. I have short, thin lashes, so I need a lot of mascara, but you might not need as much. It took me awhile to figure out how this mascara worked best for me, but once I did – I’m a lifer. I LOVE IT!! It also gets an A+.

L’Oreal Voluminous® False Fiber Lashes™ Mascara

falsefiber

Part of the reason I tried this mascara and the Butterfly is because in the comments on my last mascara post, several people suggested I try L’Oreal Voluminous. Due to my aforementioned love of gimmicky mascaras, I decided to try the “false fiber” version next. Like I mentioned, my lashes are thin, so I was excited about these fibers that would help thicken them. Well, I can say I was not disappointed – BUT it took me awhile to get used to this mascara. First, I found out (the hard way) that it comes out pretty thickly on the brush, so I had to WIPE the brush off on the edge of the tube and apply sparingly. A little goes a LONG way. My final determination? I really like the thickening quality of this mascara and the intensity it gives to my lashes, but I prefer to use it as a 2nd-coat mascara and use something else underneath. (Works great with Butterfly if you want a L’Oreal one-two punch!) i give it a B on its own, and an A when used on top of another mascara.

And finally…

Maybelline the Rocket mascara by Volum’ Express

vex-rocket-washable_pack-shot

The Rocket! I had to try it. I mean…the name suggests explosive lashes, right? This mascara also uses a plastic brush with short bristles…I am starting to like this type of brush no matter what tube it comes out of. The Rocket formula is awesome! It makes my lashes super-long and it’s just simple and quick to achieve a great look with this. I know when I pull this one out of my makeup bag, I can’t go wrong. It stays on perfectly well, too. No smudging ever. I give it an A+!

That’s all I’ve got for now…but as long as they keep making mascaras, I’ll keep buying and testing them!

Have you tried any on this list? Which are your picks and pans?

Sophie on Sochi

Have I maybe mentioned one or two (hundred) times that I LOOOOVE the Olympics? Well, I do. And the Sochi games are no exception. I am loving watching them every night, and for once in my life, I wish I had cable so I could watch the NBC Sports Network during the day (because apparently I am REALLY missing out on the Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinksi commentary. DANGIT!) But anyhoo. The Sochi games are now far better than any other games I’ve experienced, because I have this fellow Olympics-lover at my side:

SophieSochi
She really needs a microphone or a headset.

And her fresh, un-filtered, 7-year-old commentary is better by far than than Johnny or Tara on their most faaaaaabulous day. She’s so funny that I’ve started a hashtag for her on FB and Twitter – #sophieonsochi. (I mostly put her hilarious comments on FB, but I do throw a couple over to Twitter when I get the chance.) She’s SO funny, that I am considering letting her stay up late this week on school nights because prime time coverage starts at her bedtime and I don’t think the internetz can SURVIVE without her hilarious commentary! Take this gem, for example (sorry American figure skater Jason Brown!):

“Are you sure that’s a boy? Then why is he wearing a ponytail?”– Sophie on Jason Brown #sophieonsochi

Or this one:

“Good thing he’s not on Team USA. We don’t have to worry about it.” #sophieonsochi (After Patrick Chan’s long program – sorry Canadian friends!)

She got really animated during the skiing last night. She LOVES her some Bode Miller. She also loved the copious shots/profiles/etc. of his wife, Morgan. Here’s some of her best Bode-related commentary:

“Oh come on! Bode Miller has to go next! This is ridiculous!” #sophieonsochi

“Bode has a wife. If he gets 12th that’s ok. Man, skiing is hard! I am not doing skiing! No way Jose!” #sophieonsochi

“I wonder when they’re gonna have kids…oh wait, I guess they do have children.” #sophieonsochi #sophieonbodemillerbackgroundpiece

(I’m thankful that the fact that another woman was pregnant with his child at the time that Morgan and he got married went RIGHT over Sophie’s head. Jeepers!)

“Man, his wife is happy! He’s one of the funnest players to watch. That’s why I love him so much.” #sophieonsochi #sophieonbode

“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! At least he still gets a silver medal. Wait, hopefully he will get to go AGAIN and beat him.” #sophieonsochi #sophieonbode

(*Mom’s note: He eventually got bronze, not silver. And Sophie was thought it was super-unfair that he was not allowed to give it another go & try to improve his time.)

Her final two gems of last night were more overall comments – observations of a very astute 7-year-old:

“When you’re watching them slide on snow on TV it doesn’t really look like snow it just looks like white stuff.” #sophieonsochi

“If you snowboard down a big hill with no tricks, it’s pretty easy.” #sophieonsochi

What brilliance will Sophie bless us with next? I can’t wait to hear! She’s teaching me so much everyday…and her disdain for other countries is pretty hilarious too. (“RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA! Whatever!!” #sophieonsochi At least she’s patriotic…)

Don’t forget to follow the hashtag #sophieonsochi for more brilliant live commentary this week! It’s better than cable!
