Well, this is it.

It’s just after midnight, and the very last day of my twenties has officially begun. I am really feeling pretty good about the whole birthday thing, but it is kind of strange to think about the end of an era. I’ve been thinking tonight about all the things that have happened since my 20th birthday. Since then, I…

… got engaged.

… graduated from college.

… got married.

… watched the towers fall.

… got a job.

… bought a house.

readafewhundredbooks.

… traveled to San Diego and Denver, New York City and Cooperstown, Orlando and Houston, Cedar Rapids and St. Louis, Nashville and Louisville, Cleveland and Indianapolis.

… got another job.

… had a baby.

… made, kept and lost really good friends.

… listened to some really good music.

… bought another house.

… rediscovered the joy of trick-or-treating.

… started a blog.

… wrestled a snake.

… had another baby.

… discovered Facebook. Then Twitter.

… started graduate school.

witnessed history.

… went to Disney World. Four times.

… sacrificed my dignity in the name of a good blog post.

… went to baseball games and zoos and museums and parks.

… woke up each morning.

… and kissed my babies goodnight.

All and all, it was a pretty good decade.

  1. And, I’m guessing that this big deal momma is included in that *new* friends category!

We’ll always have that moment in the airport w/ your pilot…learning about your coach and hearing my tales of the fair…always 🙂

Here’s the thing, since you and I are the youngest in our group, we can say we’re just *30* not in our *30’s*. In my world that’s a HUGE difference! Geesh, we are so young and hawt! 😀

  2. Happy Birthday! Welcome to the 30s club…do you feel different? LOL

Yep, another “just” 30 here. I will be just 30 for the next 10 years! 🙂

Andrea – is right! You are both young and hawt!!!

  3. Happy Birthday, Emily! I’m almost 34 and so far, my 30s have been WAY better than my 20s. 🙂

And we are huge John Prine/ Iris DeMent fans here, too. We see him in concert whenever he’s in Nashville.

  4. Happy Birthday! You got way more accomplished than I did by my 30’s. I especially like the “sacrificed my dignity” one. Welcome to a new decades

  5. Happy Birthday! Oh, to be 30 again! I am old enough to be your mother. In fact, my mom was my age when I turned 30. Yikes! I used to like you until this moment. Happy, happy, happy birthday.

  6. Glad I was coerced into reading this now. 🙂 Seriously, Emily, I love this post. It’s a great way to reflect on what has been an important time in your life! Love it!!

I really wish I’d done something like this for my 30th. Maybe I still will…after all, I’m not 31 yet! 🙂

  7. Happy Birthday! The 30s are going to be very fun years for you, wait and see. One day you are going to look back on your 20s and laugh out loud about the things you did then. Enjoy!

  8. Happy Birthday Girlie! I absolutely loved your post. Hope you have a great day and welcome to the club. 30s aren’t THAT bad!

  9. I love birthdays, they are such a reminder to celebrate the life you have lived and MAN, looking at your twenties YOU HAVE LIVED! I have a feeling the thirties will trump your twenties.

I hope you have a great birthday and a great first year in your thirties! On your birthday, I celebrate you and the wonderful person you are. I hope you do the same!

    HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  10. So like Marsha and I say, use lots of grease, Crisco, Vaseline, butter, anything that makes you slippery and oily and you will look 29 forever!

Listen to us. Our combined ages are almost a century. Grease works. . .

    Happy Birthday kitten!

  11. Happy Birthday, Emily! You share a bday with my hubs..he’ll be 33 tomorrow. 🙂 Love your post as well…you did a lot of great stuff in your 20s.

  12. Happy birthday tomorrow!

I wasn’t able to feel too must self pity when I turned 30. My birthday is 9/11. My 30th was the first anniversary of the towers falling. So it seems pretty petty of me to even consider feeling sorry for myself just because I was 30 that day. But my kids (I was doing a partial hospitalization therapy group with middle schoolers back then) had a great time teasing me and calling me grandma. Honestly? My 30’s have been fabulous so far!

  13. You’ve done lots of great things so far in your life! I’ve been proud of you every day, and I love you with all my heart. — Your Dad.

  14. The 30’s rock – I mean, you have been hanging out with some of the coolest 30-something #bigdealmoms who show you how to have big deal fun, right?

    Happy birthday!!
