Snaggletooth

The Tooth Fairy has been a frequent visitor to our house lately – take a look at the state of Kate’s mouth:

The whole losing teeth thing? Grosses me out. I don’t know what it is, but the sights and sounds (and yes, there are sounds) involved with loose teeth just make me cringe. Andy feels the same way.

So we just let Kate deal with it.

She’s lost a total of seven teeth now, and she’s pulled each and every one of them herself. Usually as Andy and I hide our eyes.

I’ve been astounded, though, by the demands on the Tooth Fairy these days. When Kate lost her most recent tooth, as she was getting ready for bed she told me she was going to sleep backwards that night, because when her friend slept backwards, the Tooth Fairy brought her a Build-a-Bear.

“YOUR Tooth Fairy brings quarters,” I told her. A Build-a-Bear? Seriously? Kate’s got a lot of teeth in her head, we’ve got to keep the expectations low or we’ll go broke. That night I tweeted about what she said, and someone responded saying that her child’s friend got $100 for her first tooth, and $10 for subsequent teeth. If that’s the going rate, I think I can part with a few of my own teeth!

Needless to say, the Tooth Fairy didn’t bring Kate a Build-a-Bear or a $100 bill that night – it was more like four quarters… which really, I don’t think is too bad! But maybe we are behind in the times.

What is the going rate for the Tooth Fairy at your house? Please let me know – as you can see, Kate’s about to lose another one and I need to find out if I should run out and sell some plasma.

  1. A Build-a-Bear? $100?? What did her friend get for Christmas from Santa? A CAR? It’s not too early to get your kindergartener a camaro is it? I mean, if she really wants one…

  2. $100 a tooth!
Somebody owes me some damn money!

Seriously, I had a tooth cut out when i was six years old, they used ether to put me to sleep and told me a story about “Tippy the Airplane”, which they never finished, and I still dno’t konw the ending…and I got a DIME for that!

    Inflation…gotta love it!

    UP

  3. I give my younger two a dollar and my 11yr old (who is still losing teeth) two dollars. I can’t imagine paying $10 a tooth, like you said, I could spare a few too for that!

  4. For us, the first tooth resulted in a $2 payout. All subsequent teeth were $1. (spray a $1 with a little water, then iron it, makes it look super-crisp)

  5. Um, we never did tooth fairy. Sorry. And wait until you hear what it sound like when they rip out a molar because it was getting annoying (CRB is getting his 12 year molars right now) – I still haven’t recovered!

  6. My now 9 year old cousin got $50 for her first tooth. I’m not sure how much she’s gotten for the others, I was in pure and total shock over it, as was most of the family. She’s pretty spoiled as is, but dood, $50?!? I was ready to start pulling my own teeth right then and there. I got a $1 in dimes when I lost teeth, you know, back in the dinosaur ages!!!

  7. Abby and Hannah have each lost the same amount of teeth – 8. It’s been quite a while since either of them have had a wiggly tooth though, now that I think about it, huh.

Our tooth fairy brings one dollar per tooth. Perfect to save up or spend at the dollar store. 🙂

  8. Teeth are worth $5 in our house. It is what we had on hand the first time so it became the going rate. With three kids, I might should have reconsidered that amount the first time!

  9. Did my grandpa bowers take your tooth out UP? And to Emily, just be happy all those teeth come in nice and straight. My mother constantly used to say, “Do not open that with your teeth, I sent 3 thousand on those!”

  10. Tooth Fairy always left my kids $1 per tooth, with a bonus of $1 if they pulled it out themselves. It was a great incentive cause I never had to pull a tooth!

  11. We’re still in the teeth-coming-in stage so I can’t really speak to this, however a buck a tooth sounds good to me! I remember once when I was little the tooth fairy brought me a pack of plastic bracelets, and I thought that was the bomb. All the other times I got coins.

  12. We do a buck a tooth. My son just got two of his baby teeth extracted and very vocally wished the tooth fairy would bring more…so maybe going up to $2….but not much else. Yikes.

  13. What a fun post to read! My little guy is in the same boat! I can’t get over how many he has lost recently. Crazy! I found your site through reading Blissdom posts, and I just wanted to let you know that my sister (@youcanmakethis) and I will be there and am so excited! I would love to meet both of you!

  14. A dollar is plenty for a tooth, I just had a tooth pulled and the only thing I received was a “dry socket” and a “bill”

  15. I do a lot of teeth counting of my pediatric patients who are being seen for being short. (It gives some hints as to whether they might just be late bloomers.) The last 6 months or so I’ve been asking the going rate for teeth for the tooth fairy. I’ve been surprised to find that everyone gets at least a dollar a tooth with $5 not being uncommon. I usually comment saying “wow, I used to get a quarter.” The parents usually say they used to get a quarter or a dime. I guess the tooth fairy hasn’t been effected by the economic downturn.
