Kate’s first honeymoon

One of Kate’s favorite books is a Golden Book about Disney’s The Little Mermaid. It’s totally my favorite book, too. Actually I can’t stand it and have to forcibly restrain myself from sighing and rolling my eyes when she inevitably picks it before bedtime. If they didn’t make Ariel look so… so dumb, I probably wouldn’t mind it as much. But I digress.

As I was saying… as I’m sure you’re aware, after the prince saves the damsel in distress, they get married and sail off into the sunset to live happily ever after. BARF. Oops, sorry. But somewhere on that last page, it says that they go on a honeymoon. So after reading this for the 957th time, here’s the conversation Kate and I had.

Kate: Mommy, what’s a honeymoon?
Me: It’s a trip that people go on after they get married.
Kate: Oh.
Me (trying to be helpful and give an example): Daddy and I went on a honeymoon after we got married.
Kate: And I went too!
Me: No, honey, this was before you were born.
Kate: But I went on a honeymoon when I was in your belly.
Me: Um, not exactly… I mean I guess you were an egg or whatever, but this was a long time.. I mean, years… before you were born.
Kate: But I was in your belly.
Me: Don’t go spreading that around, ok?

The next morning, as we were getting ready for work, Kate bounded into the bathroom and said “Daddy! I went on a honeymoon with you when I was in Mommy’s belly!” Andy sputtered and said “Uh, um..” a couple times and then looked to me for help. I said, “I told her she was an egg or something. I don’t know. You’re the biology teacher, you explain it.” He turned to her and said, “Kate, do you want some Cheerios?” If all else fails, distract ’em.

I can only imagine the story she told the sitter, the preschool teacher, the mail carrier, and anyone else who would listen that day!

  1. That is one of the benefits of being a preschool teacher. I get a lot of interesting information about the parents at my school… compliments of the children sharing stories at circle time.
