So today marks the beginning of week 11 in this pregnancy. Yesterday I had myself convinced that I was really starting week 12, but after consulting WebMD’s pregnancy calendar, my hopes were dashed.
I am realllllly eager to get out of this first trimester. I’ve been trying to suck it up, but I’ve been feeling like crap. Not a lot of throwing up, thank goodness, just a ton of nausea and I’ve been so tired I could cry.
I don’t know who coined the phrase “morning sickness,” but I think it must have been a man. Every day I get fooled into thinking that I’m feeling ok and maybe there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.
Then 4 p.m. rolls around, and I’m sending an IM to Jenny that says something along the lines of “I’m dying.”
I don’t know why, but I feel so much worse in the late afternoon/evening, which is just lovely seeing as how that’s the time I have to spend with my family. I’d rather feel awful at work and get it over with!
I really don’t remember this happening last time, and I don’t know the best way to deal with it… so I’m turning to you!
Do you have any tricks on keeping the nausea at bay? Any tips to get me through the evening?
And please, please, someone reassure me that this is going to get better soon!!
Eleven down, 29 to go. Ugh, that is depressing!
I had horrible morning sickness with both of my kids. And I agree, it never went away in the afternoon or evening. 🙁 I tried the crackers, the small frequent bland meals, etc etc. None of it worked well for me. I found only TWO things that worked….
#1….I lived on salsa and chips. For weeks. Something about the spices and the saltiness of the chips. They actually settled my stomach. Maybe it’s just because I was afraid to throw up all that spiciness? Whatever. Now I call my 13 yr old my little salsa girl. For about 7 weeks, that’s all I ate. And her attitude proves she’s got spice!
#2….to throw up. When I was really nauseated, I’d throw up, then I’d feel better for a couple of hours. Just putting my head over a toilet was all it took. I threw up in many a restaurants so I could enjoy a meal. Puke BEFORE I sat down to dinner. I was like an anti-anorexic! 🙂
That got me through. Of course, it wasn’t THAT easy otherwise I’d consider a third kid. 🙂
I commented about eating protein all day long, but after reading this, I wanted to add, it’s worse in the evening because you are not as distracted from it. If you can force yourself to keep moving and doing you will feel a bit better. Sitting on the couch, hanging out with your family is just going to make you feel worse. Get out for a walk and enjoy this beautiful fall weather. Remember to take your protein snack with you!
I would suggest taking Unisom or generic equivalent – half a pill in the morning, half a pill at night – it really helped me when nothing else would – I promise it won’t make yu any more tired than you already are.
I had “evening sickness” as well. A sip ginger syrup was the only thing that worked for me. We got it a Whole Foods kinda store and I think it says on the bottle something about helping with nausea. It just helped soothe the ‘ole stomach. They even make Ginger tablets or mints that can help too. Good luck! Hang in there! THIS TO SHALL PASS! (annoying to hear perhaps but true) =)
My wife has “evening sickness” but it only lasted until about week 15. So…maybe you will hit your 2nd trimester it will go away 🙂
Sending positive vibes your way!

Mint gum helped me a ton!!! I bought a huge package of it at Costco and just kept on chewing like a cow.
Small and frequent sips of ice cold gatorade helped me the most. I know I would have lost a lot more than 13 pounds in the first tri, were it not for that stuff (which I never drank before being pregnant, and haven’t drank any since either).
Aww! Sorry its been so rough! I remember and dread that part of pregnancy! I had continuos nasuea for the first 16 weeks. And not just where I felt a little sick, I was actually throwing up (TMI) more than a dozen times a day! (I ended up in the hospital 3 times for dehydration, twice in the first trimester, and once at 35 weeks!)
Heres what worked for me:
It sounds weird, but when I had my all-day sickness, the only thing that would help was sour stuff. Lemonade was always by my side. And the more bitter, the better! Jolly Ranchers went with me everywhere, even to the hosptial! Pineapples and pineapple juice was great, something about the acidicness.
I also got so sick of saltines (I can never eat them again, even now!) that I started looking for other bland stomach settling foods. Kids Animal Crackers are great! And they sell a bulk bag at the grocery store. I would make up a lilttle ziploc baggie and stick it in my purse to take to work everyday. It really helped!
Good luck and HTH!!! Feel better, mom!
Yes, it will get better but I know how awful that first trimester is. I was so sick every day, puking, nausea and everything- and also in the evenings I got really bad, but then one day it just kinda stopped- went away and I was so happy!!
Second trimester was the best, but then came third!!!
Hang in there
Try Icebreaker mints…the one’s that worked for me was the winterfresh ones. I was sick all through my pregnancy I really didn’t throw up but had nausea the whole time….yuck 🙁
I felt great UNTIL week 11!!! It was alittle joke on me. Lasted the ENTIRE rest of the pregnancy. Here are my tips:
~They make things called preggy pops. Lollipops for combatting nausea. I’ve seen them at the front counter on Motherhood Maternity stores.
~Red Raspberry Pills from the herb store. Catch is you MUST qiut taking the last month. It somehow tones your uterus. I had a friend who kept taking them, becasue she still felt sick that last month. Her labor from water breaking / first major contraction was about 3 hours long and very rough.
~This one is totally non-invasive. There are wrist bands avalible at drug stores called Sea-Band. They are actually made for motion sickness, but work on all kinds of nausea. I keep a couple pairs at all times now!!! Stomach flu is not so scary with these. It is an elastic band with a small plastic button on the inside. It gives directions on exactly where to place in it your wrist in the packaging with photos, but in words…..(here’s my best attempt: Look at the inside of your wrist. At the bottom crease in your wrist place your index and middle finger from your other hand. Just below the bottom finger and between the 2 bones in your wrist is a pressure point to relieve nausea.) You can’t push then both at the same time yourself very well, so they make the elastic bands. Can do the same thing until you can get to the drugstore with marbles and tape — only do this short term!! The wrist bands can be worn 24/7 until the elastic loses strength. They are a beautiful invention.
With the holidays approaching, I’m sure the next 29 weeks are going to pass quickly! I hope you start feeling better once you enter your second trimester!!

I think I commented on the Premesis prenatal vitamins before, so I’ll add: Water water water. Then go drink some water. Then have another glass. You’re in the bathroom half of your waking moments right now anyway–what’s a few more trips? I hated being pregnant, but I love the end result 🙂
I always felt better when I chewed mint gum. There are also these little ginger cookies that they sell at Trader Joe’s. They’re really tasty and they help A TON. I would eat them in bed before I even got up so that I wasn’t so nauseous all morning long. Life saver!!
Also, if it gets really bad…you can call your doctor. Mine lasted the entire pregnancy so I was not gaining weight like I needed to. I ended up on Phenergan for my whole first and third trimester. It’s totally safe and, boy, does it kick that nausea!!! (makes you really tired, though!)
B vitamins worked for me. Ask your doc about them.
I am sorry. I feel for you. I am in week 13. I also had evening sickness. I bought some ginger ale and saltines from whole foods. I would pour the ginger ale over crushed ice and sip on it for a while. I feel much better now that I am moving out of the first trimester. Hang in there! The ginger ale is also helping me with indigestion too. I wouldn’t get the ginger ale at the regular store since it has a bunch of junk in it you don’t need.
Sea bands.
Sour or minty stuff.
And just good, old fashioned hanging in there – or punching everyone in sight … whichever works best for you!
Oh, I was so sick weeks 6 – 12 with my first baby, that I would lay on the couch and cry. “I wish I was having twins, because I don’t want to be pregnant ever again.” I could barely eat, though I forced myself; I rarely threw up, but I didn’t gain any weight until 20 weeks. Both my girls still turned out healthy 😉
Oranges worked well (I have no idea why). Anything minty (try peppermint tea).
Hope you feel well soon! 🙂
