Thursday I had my 24-week checkup at my OB, which fortunately was very uneventful. My doc and I talked more about the upcoming mom’s sale she sells stuff at and I go to sometimes (which I didn’t go to, because fortunately between Emily’s Sammy and Cortney’s two boys, Jonah is going to be set for life with clothes!) than we did about my pregnancy.
I did however, have a moment with the nurse when she was taking my blood pressure and asking me the routine questions.
“Any swelling?” she queried.
“Not yet!” I shot back cheerfully.
She laughed. “Not yet?
“Oh, I’m sure it’s coming soon,” I responded.
I shouldn’t have said that! I went home and worked on cleaning my dining room (let’s just say that since our kitchen has been re-done, I am collecting kitchen stuff from all over the house. I don’t know how it got so spread out!) and by the end of the day, I could feel my feet swelling. Then Friday, I worked like a DOG cleaning out Sophie’s room and closet (*cough* eightbagstoGoodwill *cough*) which literally took me all day and some help from Bobby when he got home. Once again I could feel my feet and ankles getting bigger. They still didn’t look too bad, but I could tell.
When I was pregnant with Joshua, my blood pressure went crazy-high the day after he was due, causing me to have to be induced. After I had him, my blood pressure stayed high and my feet became roughly the size of the Elephant Man’s. I will never forget my mother looking at me as I sat at home with my newborn, just 4 or 5 days old, and saying in all seriousness, “I’m really worried about your feet.” They were HUGE.
With Sophie, my blood pressure played nice and my swelling wasn’t as bad, although I did definitely get some pudgy feet. Also during my pregnancy with her, I could feel my fingers and toes turning into sausages when I would get stressed. So I learned when I needed to stop and put my feet up, which helped.
Now that flip-flop season is about over, I am thankful to have some comfy cute Crocs wrapped Mary Jane flats to put my feet in when they DO start getting ginormous. (I got them when we did the Back 2 School Bash giveaway and they are AWESOME!) Because Kankle Time approacheth, ladies, and it ain’t gonna be pretty!
How about you? Did you survive your pregnancy kankle-free or did you blow up like a balloon?
NO thoughts on this topic yet? I started swelling on a regular basis with my first at 16 weeks! Yes, you read that right. And all the way til the end. It was horrible, esp in the third trimester. I’m almost 30 weeks now and every week that has passed swelling-free since 16 weeks I have done a little jig. I’ve noticed a little hand swelling lately, but it keeps going back down. I have a minor freak-out that the freak-show is coming every time I see it though. I too wore Crocs after flip flop season was over! Unfortunately now when I think about wearing those shoes, I just think of huge feet and kankles.
I escaped with out any swelling with my first. Nothing so far in this one, but I’m only at 16 weeks. Fortunately I sit at a desk most of the day so I’m not running around and working too hard!
When we were at the hospital having #1, my feet were sooooo cold from the AC in the room. I was hooked up to the mobile fetal monitor and an IV, so between all the cords, tubes, and the fact that my belly was huge, I coudn’t reach my feet.
So Knute took care of me, sliding some warm socks on my feet, while humming the theme song to the Anheiser-Busch Clydesdale commerical.
😉
My kankles were EPIC!
Well, you already know, that I didn’t have kankles with EITHER pregnancy ; )!! Love you!!
I love how you’ve tacitly convinced everyone to spell it with a k! Herd mentality!
Didn’t start to swell with E-man until i was 6 weeks away from d-day and it wasn’t terrible although hubby got a good laugh out of it…..
Emily is right… I’ve always spelled it cankles and yet I didn’t even do that to make you feel better. I just DID it. MOOOO!
My Cankle Story: About 6 weeks away from my EDD I was helping Colin buy some stuff at Lowe’s Home Improvement. I kept noticing one of my hands had gone numb, I’d shake it out and it would go away. Then I realized the hand that was going numb was the one not holding my purse to my shoulder, the one not elevated, the one that had 4 bright red fingers on it and 1 ghastly white ring finger. Being the calm health professional I am, I found Colin and began to hysterically demand he take me home as my finger was about to fall off! He quietly asked my to go wait in the car, put my feet on the dash, lay the seat back and hold my hands over my head. My swelling went down, but after that I was essentially a beached whale, because anytime I was up for too long my hands and feet swelled like sausages!
I never had cankles with any of my three pregnancies. My feet would start to swell towards the end of the day with #1 and #2, but I was still working then and on my feet most of the day. I’m sorry you have to go through this!
As stylish as you are, I’m sure you’ll rock the kankles well enough…I may have to do a Fashion Friday on it however…you know…”Do These Socks Make Me Look Fat?”

@Mackenzie – Aren’t you a doctor? Why did your ‘nursewhosinmedshcooltobecomeadoctor’ husband have to explain it to you?
@Em – shouldn’t that be NERD mentality in Jenny’s case?

I’m 37 weeks today and for the past several days I have been staring at my feet thinking, “Are they swollen or are they just fat?” I really can’t tell. But they are definitely one of the two! Oh kankles…
I started swelling when I was 32 weeks pregnant with my twins. At the time, I knew my hands and feet were terribly swollen…but it isn’t until I look back at pictures that I’m really horrified by my swelling! The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man look did not work for me! : )
