Quirktastic

Every morning when I wake up, the first thing I do is put on a pair of shoes. Not slippers, or “house shoes” as I would call them if I was OLD, but real shoes. Crocs, as a matter of fact, my Malindi’s or Olivia’s usually. I leave them next to my bed when I take them off at night so I can put them right back on in the morning. You see, being pregnant flattened out my feet, and it hurts them to go barefoot. So as soon as they hit the floor, they hit my shoes! As a matter of fact, I am currently rocking these shoes (which Bobby got me for our last anniversary, cause he knows what I likes):

With polka-dot pajama pants I’ve had since college and a giant sweatshirt Bobby’s parents gave me the first Christmas we were dating (it’s definitely “vintage”.)

We all have our little quirks, things that we do that make us in a small way, radically different from everyone else we know. It’s fun for me to see these quirks develop in my kids. Sophie, for instance, cannot stand to have her feet covered by blankets. She always has to have them sticking out of the covers. Joshua has to have his socks pulled up all the way, as far as they will possibly go, or he cannot bear to get on with his day.

(Hmm. I just realized we all have foot-related quirks!)

I’m getting to the age where I can actually start appreciating my quirks. I mean the fact that I have to sleep with white noise like an infant and have a glass of chocolate milk with Hershey’s syrup first thing every morning are just some things that make me me.

So tell me, what makes you or your kids Quirktastic?

  1. i love quirks! it becomes the only cute little reasons our spouses fall in love with us all over again (after 10 yrs., can i get an AMEN!) so… i HAVE to have icewater before bed, that bob makes. and i only end up taking a couple sips. i’m right there with sopjhie too- KEEP those feet uncovered!

  2. Quirks? hmmm, I need moving air all the time- fan on in dead of winter- drives my family crazy.

My youngest son likes to hide in dark places, under a chair or in a closet to play his gameboy (weird I know and he is 12 LOL)

  3. i can’t fall asleep without some sort of blanket on – regardless of how hot it is.
my daughter can’t stand tights. which is annoying because tights are sooo cute!!!

  4. Quirks? I have so many…. need the fan noise to sleep, used to always go bare foot, now I must wear shoes (I have a bone spur)I can not sleep with covers on my feet. Even if they are cold they have to be sticking out.

  5. I have to sleep with an extra pillow to put my arms around. I also have to wear some sort of footwear in the house…but that’s because my floors stay dirty, and I cannot stand to get that all on my feet!

  6. I have so many quirks I can’t keep track of them all (because they are normal to me – I only realize they are quirks when my husband chuckles at me). I can’t stand to have my feet covered unless it is freezing. I can’t wear just socks – either barefoot or socks and shoes. And don’t touch me with your socks – ew – hate that feeling. I always have to have something to drink – it might sit there for 2 hours before I touch it but it needs to be available.

  7. I like ketchup with my fries, but if the ketchup gets anywhere else, it totally grosses me out. Heaven forbid it gets on my hand – I cannot just lick it off. I have to quickly get it off with a napkin and probably get rid of the napkin so I don’t risk seeing a ketchup-stained napkin. And really, I can’t stand watching other people eat ketchup or see it on their plate. Totally grosses me out. I’m so glad you’ve declared this ridiculousness as “quirktastic.” 🙂

  8. Reading this was like reading on myself…I don’t know when it started, but I have to wear shoes in the house, too. Drives me nuts because I grew up always barefoot, but my feet hurt so bad after just minutes of being so now. And my husband laughs at how long it takes me to get ready for bed. After doing the normal things of brushing teeth and washing my face, I have to take my inhaler, put some lotion on my hands, turn my fan on (cannot sleep without it), and put on my eye mask. He thinks I’m crazy and calls me a high maitenance sleeper.

  9. I would rather call mine “endearing qualities”…and there are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too many to list!

  10. My son is going through a little stage where he wants to sleep with a pillow under his head AND a pillow on top of his knees.

I guess he got this from me, because sometimes I will sleep with a pillow in between my knees to be more comfy. But he takes it to the extreme.

  11. After thinking about it all night…you were right, I am perfect having no quirks : ). Just don’t let J see this comment or he might have to write a list.
OH OH just had a thought, I do like to obsess about picking wax out of the boys ears!! Is that a quirk? Evan has learned the look and the crooked finger that quickly approaches.

  12. Gosh, I have SO many, and Josie is gettin’ there!
Mine is I have to have coffee, or some type of caffine in the morning..I am a total grump if I do not get that. I too sleep with a fan going, doesn’t matter what time of the year…
Josie HATES shoes and socks, not matter what time of the year. She loves to shop for the shoes but if she walks in a house they are off.
She doesn’t like sleeping with covers, therefore I have to dress her extra warm. If you are brushing your teeth she has to also, even if she has brushed them 4 other times that day (which is a good thing, right?)

  13. I have two particular quirks, both revolving around numbers. I like the volume on the television set in multiples of 5. The main problem with our current TV is that 4 is waaay quiet, but sometimes, 5 is too loud. So we subtitle everything, and it works out. But it bugs me when I have to put it on 4.
The other quirk – I used to (before children) get out of bed when the clock read something ending in a 5 or a 0. So if I woke up, and it was 6:42, I’d have to wait until 6:45. Weird, right?
