Mommy Monday Tip: Everybody Etsy Now!

Today we’re participating in the Mommy Monday Tip with the fine ladies over at the Mommy Community. My Mommy Monday Tip is to tell you about a great website I recently discovered to find great unique handmade items for you and your kiddos: Etsy! Etsy is an online marketplace where you can browse, buy, and sell all things handmade. There are hundreds of sellers and you can find anything and everything, from bibs to cloth diaper covers to chic purses for Mommy. It’s great to find that special outfit or essential baby item that’s just a little different. I mainly dress my daughter in Carter’s but sometimes I want something that not all the other babies at the playground already have.

I learned about Etsy from my friend Jessica, who is very crafty and has her own Etsy store called Pumpkin Head Baby Co. Her baby & kid items are very fun and unique. I’ve bought several for myself and friends, including two of these soakproof bibs for Sophia. They are amazing – truly soakproof! Sophie is a champion drooler so I always put one of her Pumpkin Head Baby Co. bibs on her when we are going to be out for a long day. That way I don’t have to take several bibs with me. Jessica has tons of fabric to choose from, and I chose two funky purple prints that really dress up her outfits. I also love these sock monkey bibs!

These make great baby gifts when you are looking for something distincitve, or are shopping for someone whose tastes aren’t quite status quo. For my friend Kelly, pregnant with a little girl but not absolutely devoted to pink, I bought a gorgeous brown, red, & gold patterned minky blanket & matching soakproof bib. They were feminine yet funky and really made Mommy happy! I also love the custom toddler clothes. Check out this adorable ice cream shirt I just bought for my cousin Ellie’s little girl’s 1st birthday (surprise Ellie! I mailed it Thursday!):

How cute is that? I just love giving things that were handmade just for the recipient, even if it wasn’t me who made it. I mean, after all, no one would want anything made by me, ‘cause I can’t even sew a button. Which is why, for Emily’s birthday, I had Jessica make her this fab-U-lous purse:

Now don’t you wish you were on my gift list?

So do yourself a favor and go browse Etsy! Some of my other favorite sellers are Onegirliegirl, where I got Sophia this fabulous hair clip, and SassySisters – two cute elementary age girls who design great jewelry. I recently bought a great pair of earrings from these girlies and they make me ridiculously happy! As does the fantastic headband I just purchased from their mom, who has her own store, Chubby Baby Designs. I think I have an Etsy addiction…

Now, go Etsy Everybody! If you see anything you like at Onegirliegirl’s shop, just mention “Mommin’ It Up” in the notes to the seller to receive 10% off your order!

It’s a Miracle!

Three and a half years ago, I had a baby boy. He was sweet, cute, cuddly, and happy. He nursed well, he slept well, and he was an “easy” baby. Perhaps he was a little too easy, because when I became a mother for the second time, my daughter totally rocked my world. She was cute and cuddly all right, and she always nursed well, but she was not exactly content and happy like her brother had been, and she was never really a good sleeper.

Since she was also a wild child while still in my womb, I’d had a feeling this might happen, and on the advice of my very smart (beautiful, savvy, etc.) cousin Emily, I had purchased a Miracle Blanket before Sophia was born. The Miracle Blanket is a swaddling blanket and it truly is miraculous.

You see, swaddling, which is very comforting to a newborn, is only comforting if you do it exactly right. Doing it exactly right can be quite complicated, especially for one or two sleep-deprived, bleary-eyed parents. When Emily first told me about the Miracle Blanket, it was in an email, in which she said, “If I’d had a Miracle Blanket, it wouldn’t have taken me and Andy both to swaddle Kate correctly.” I am happy to say she is right!

When you have a Miracle Blanket, you can swaddle an infant quickly, correctly, and safely – all by yourself! I am functionally retarded (ask anyone who knows me!) and even I can do it. This blanket has a pouch for baby’s legs, flaps to hold baby’s arms tightly at her side, and uses no buckles, Velcro, or snaps. We used a swaddler (with Velcro) for my son that he could easily get out of by the time he was three weeks old, but the Miracle Blanket is made to fit babies up to four months old, and my daughter fit in hers until she was five months (and she is on the higher side of the growth chart). It was truly a sad day for Bobby and me when we had to take Sophie “off blanket”. She loved being swaddled, and every night around ten p.m. when she’d start to get fussy, we’d just quickly wrap her up tight like a baby burrito in the Miracle Blanket and she’d calm down. I mean girlfriend would get happy. Since she couldn’t kick and flail her limbs about, she didn’t startle herself awake, and she started sleeping for three and four hour stretches at night instead of for just 1-2 hour stretches. Thus I was able to function during the day and parent both my children instead of just lying on the couch like a zombie or calling my own mother to please come save me.

The Miracle Blanket costs around $30 (click here to purchase one) and it is worth every penny. Actually if I had to do it all over again I’d pay twice as much because there’s no way I could have survived Sophia’s first three months without it. Luckily, you won’t even have to pay full price because the good folks at The Miracle Blanket are offering $5 off to Mommin’ It Up readers! Just use coupon code MOMUP231 at checkout! It’s good until the end of the year! They come in several different color combinations (I got a gender neutral green so I can pass it along to Emily if she ever pops out another kid) and they clean beautifully in the washer and dryer. (You’ve never SEEN me do a load of laundry as fast as when I had to wash the MB, because it had to be ready for Sophia’s bedtime.)

The moral of the story is, if you’re pregnant, do yourself a huge favor and get one, and if you’re going to a baby shower, it’s the perfect present for a new mom. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving. It makes nursing and soothing a fussy baby so much easier, and helps baby take longer naps during the day, too. Which might mean that mommy gets a nap or a shower – another miracle!

I’m Milkchic!

Milkchic Nursing Cover
Those of you who have been reading Mommin’ It Up for these past few days know that last week I had a somewhat dicey public-breastfeeding incident. Prior to that I had decided I needed a nursing cover, and that awkward experience sealed the deal. So I did some research online, checked out many a nursing cover, and decided on the Milkchic brand. After waiting breathlessly at the mailbox for a few days, I received it and eagerly tried it out this week in a busy public park. I am happy to say I LOVE it. It is fabulous! The fabric is lightweight, so even though it was very hot, it didn’t make Sophia or me uncomfortable. The cover slipped around my neck like an apron, and the rigid boning at the neck allowed me to see Sophia while she nursed. I felt totally at ease nursing my baby while knowing that I wasn’t showing anyone my goods! The covers are also, as the name implies, tres chic. There are so many fashionable patterns; it was hard for me to choose one! I finally decided on “Coconut” and I love it! The best part, however, for a thrifty (some would say cheap, and they would be right) gal like me is that the price is so reasonable. Of all the covers I looked at, Milkchic’s were priced the lowest at $20-$25 and designer Elizabeth Elder ships them ALL FOR FREE!! In a world where mail-order shipping is a price-gouging free-for-all, (thanks eBay sellers!!), this is a major customer benefit.

One of the other brands I checked out is the Modest Mommy Cover. My friend Krista has one and she adores it. She likes the fact that the neck strap is adjustable. This cover also comes in several fabulous fabrics. Krista owns the Chocolate Paisley. This brand is a little more expensive, and the shipping’s not free, but it is a $5 flat rate, which is great if you order more than one product. Modest Mommy also offers matching burp cloths.

If you’ve had a few peek-a-boob sessions yourself, I suggest investing in a nursing cover. It’s the new mommy must-have accessory! And when you’re done with it, pass it along to another mom to save her any embarrassing experiences. Emily, I hope you look good in turquoise!
