WFMW: Days of the Week Calendar

Let me start this post out by saying that this was totally and completely my MOM’s idea, so all credit goes to HER! A couple of weeks ago, my mom asked me, “Does Joshua know his days of the week?” I responded with a very intelligent “Uhhhhh….” (which meant “No, because it has never occurred to me that I should try and teach him that!”)

My mom is a genius and has a Master’s in Early Childhood Development and was a kindergarten and preschool teacher for years, so she dug this up for me from the recesses of her basement, which holds enough learning paraphernalia to stock about 12 classrooms.

It’s the coolest thing ever and so simple! It would be really easy to make, if my mom hadn’t already had one. We put a picture of where we go or what we do on each day. As you can see, Sunday has a picture of a church because we go to church on Sunday. Saturday has a picture of my husband’s face since Joshua always looks forward to him being home with us instead of at work on Saturdays. Wednesday has a picture of Cubbie Bear since Joshua goes to Awana on Wednesdays, Thursday has a school since we go to our homeschool co-op on Thursdays, and Monday and Tuesday have a picture of a house since we generally hang around home those days. In the picture, you can see that there is a little sunshine (attached with velcro) on Monday. Joshua moves the sunshine every morning to whatever the current day is. He loves doing it and then we talk about what day it is and what we are going to do and where we are going to be. It is really helping him get those days of the week down, as well as cementing what “today”, “yesterday”, and “tomorrow” mean.

Well, that’s what’s workin’ for me and my family! For more great ideas, check out Rocks in My Dryer.

P.S. Now that you’ve glimpsed my brilliance, will you go to Blissfully Domestic and read the article I’ve posted today on how you can save big money buying a used car instead of new? Thanks! You’re the best!!)

He Really Knows How (and Where) to Pick ‘Em

cool dude

My little son Joshua, at four-and-a-half, has reached a major milestone in his young life. He’s got his first crush, and he’s got it bad. Just who is the lucky gal? Well, her name is Natalie. She’s everything a mother would want for her son. She’s cute, she’s sweet, she’s polite, and…she’s our CVS cashier!

That’s right, my son has fallen for one of my favorite CVS cashiers. And why not? We see her 4,000 times a week so it was bound to happen. It’s very convenient for me, as now the child actually wants to go to CVS. Instead of groaning when I announce we’re going, he now says, “Can we go to Natalie’s CVS?” or “You know I like to go to the one where Natalie is, Mom.” (When we go and she is not working, it is a major bummer for both of us. He is not so pleasant a shopper without having Natalie to look forward to at the checkout!) He always wants to bring one of his toys to show her and enjoys telling her some fun fact about his life. Last week it was, “I’m gonna tell Natalie I’m going on a field trip.” She always humors him and I think is appropriately flattered that such a cute little boy is sweet on her.

So there ya have it. Love blooms at CVS. He loves her ’cause she’s nice and I love her ’cause she takes all my coupons. It’s the perfect arrangement! Now as long as she doesn’t mind getting married until she’s forty, this whole thing should work out really well!

All my photos were taken with my Sony Alpha DSLR-300k. Which I LOVE!

Ok, friends, I have way too many pictures this week. I just couldn’t narrow it down! So just bear with me and keep on scrollin’ down the page!

First, from a family fun gathering at my mom & dad’s house:

My niece Murrin with Sophie. She was drawing letters for Sophie to name (one of Sophie’s favorite past times).

Sophie was beyond excited watching Murrin chase Joshua around:

I caught a praying mantis trying to have some quiet time in one of my dad’s shrubs:

The main event for us this week was Joshua’s VERY FIRST FIELD TRIP! We went with our homeschool co-op to Brumbaugh’s Fruit Farm and it was a great experience! I highly recommend it!

The playground was surrounded by apple trees:

They also had a structure full of corn for the kids to play in!

And a little barn full of hay!

After learning about bees and apples and cider, we took a hay ride out to the pumpkin patch!

Here’s our whole group fanning out in search of the perfect pumpkin:

Most of them were covered with these bugs. Yuck!

Some of them had seen better days.

But eventually everyone found their perfect pumpkin:

Then we headed back to the play area for more fun! They had tons of activities. Joshua loved these little bikes.
