At the starting line

So here we are, with a few more days until all hell breaks loose.

What’s upon us?

Why, the holiday season, of course!

I don’t know about you, but Thanksgiving has completely snuck up on me this year. In fact, I’m still kind of in denial that it’s happening next week. After Thanksgiving, though, it’s off to the races! Our December calendar is already filling up fast, and I haven’t even taken into account things like shopping, wrapping, baking… or enjoying my family.

Something is holding me back this year, cautioning me against the frenzy, against the onslaught of stuff.

I don’t want the most special season of the year to go by in a blur of rushing, stress and empty cardboard boxes.

A few nights ago I was talking with Kate about the importance of putting our time and resources into experiences rather than into things. I don’t think it completely sunk in, but I want to continue the conversation and figure out how we can make experiences the cornerstone of our holidays, of our family. Honestly, neither of the kids have thought of anything they really, really want to find under the Christmas tree (except a puppy, but that is a conversation for another time), and I kind of want to take advantage of that situation and see if we can’t change the way we approach the whole thing. Not that I’m opposed to presents – I quite like them. But I don’t want to replicate the years that the kids have been inundated with so. much. stuff. that they can’t even remember what they got.

That’s not meaningful for anyone.

So, readers, what do you think? How do you and your family make the most of the holidays? How do you put aside the messages that tell us we need to buy, buy, buy and focus on what actually matters?

That is my goal this year. Remind me of that, okay?

Wrapping up some love

Yesterday afternoon I had the privilege of volunteering at the present-wrapping party for Fostering Christmas Care. FCC is the effort I told you about in this post -the effort my friend Jeni decided she was going to make happen- to provide wonderful Christmas presents to every child in foster care in Greene County, Ohio, where Jeni lives and is a foster mom herself.

Thanks to YOU and many other generous folks like you, Fostering Christmas Care met it’s $5,000 fundraising goal in just over a WEEK!  So, yesterday a group of volunteers got to go and wrap the wonderful presents bought with the money and love of so many.  We had the opportunity to make a card to go inside the presents.  We had the opportunity to teach our kids about giving, and about how God wants us to take care of others who can’t take care of themselves. We had the privilege to pray for the kids who will be receiving these gifts.

Bitty babies for the little girls
Legos and Razor scooters!!

And we had FUN.  I can’t tell you what a joyful feeling was in the air.  The atmosphere was busy, fun, happy, excited, and refreshing.  It was a wonderful time.  In just two hours, dozens of people wrapped all the gifts, made cards, snacked, and laughed together.  It was just a real blessing to be there and good for my soul.  And I got to share it with some special people, my friend E and her family, my friend Shannon and her family, my sister-in-law and niece, and of course my kids and husband.

wrapped and ready!

I know it’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but I got enough holiday warm fuzzies yesterday to last me all season!  I am definitely in the giving spirit.  Thanks again SO MUCH to all of you who gave to make this possible!

‘Tis the Season to be Greedy

Yesterday, as I do every day after preschool pick-up, I got the mail out of the mailbox on the way into the house.  Unfortunately, in that pile of mail was the Toys ‘R Us holiday toy catalog (first onslaught, I’m sure!) and Sophie saw it before I could hide or destroy it.  Now the Soph has a birthday coming up in 20 days (but who’s counting?) so she was suuuper-jazzed to see that catalog.  She immediately started going thru it and saying “IWantThisformyBirthdayIWantThisformyBirthdayIWantThisformyBirthday”.  And then, after I told her, “well, you might have to wait for Christmas for that…” it became alternating, “I want this for my birthday and this for Christmas…”

Then, after Joshua came home from school, she couldn’t wait to show him the plethora of pages full of the objects of her desire.  And of course, he too, found a few million things he wanted for Christmas.  These two were so into that catalog that I could barely tear them away from it when it was time for us to go have a playdate at Sonic with some friends!  You know you’re in trouble with instant slushie gratification doesn’t compare with toys you MIGHT get 8 weeks from now. Uh…

Anypoops, I’m totally burning the catalog, but before bed the kids had one last (really long) look and made up their lists.  Which, I am sure (at least in Sophie’s case) were just part 1 of 100. So here they are:

Sophie's Wish List. She got tired of writing.
Joshua's list. First draft!

Sophie’s most excited about the Dora kitchen, but sadly (for her) I’ve already purchased ALL her birthday presents so she’s gonna have to wait and see on that one.  As for Joshua’s list, Bobby and I were already thinking about getting him some of the MarioKart K’nex – do any of you have any of these?  All of the other Mario toys (or Sonic toys) we’ve bought him have been really poor quality, but I am hoping these are better since they are K’nex – thoughts?

So anyhoo, the greedy little boogers are ready for the season!  Good thing I have some activities planned to help them learn the joy of giving!

What toys are your kids gunning for this season?
