Things I Love Thursday: Baby Stuff (Guest Post)

Today’s post was written by my lovely sister, Anna.

Standing in target with my baby bump barely showing and registry gun in hand, I was overwhelmed with the products made for babies. I was a first time mom with a small house and little storage space. What did we actually need? I had no idea. Luckily, I have a cousin and sister with a super-fantastic blog. Emily and Jenny let me write this guest post asking their readers about the baby products that they couldn’t live without. I wanted to get the products that would be the most helpful for our baby, and not be overwhelmed with things that we would eventually find to be of little use. Keeping the suggestions in mind, we were blessed to be given absolutely everything we needed by our friends and family at one of our four showers. That’s right, four showers. We are so thankful and amazed by the generosity.

Our bundle of joy is now eight months old, and we’ve managed to not break her yet! We consider that nothing short of miracle. In my time as a new mom, here’s what I’ve found that we can’t live without:

The hospital where I gave birth is a certified baby-friendly hospital. And it was fantastic! The nurses were great, the doctors were great, the epidural was dreamy, and it is conveniently located to a Chick-fil-a. Yum! But the best part was how helpful everyone was helping me get the hang of breastfeeding. Their lactation consultants were so very helpful. I’ve happily made it through 8 months of breastfeeding without bleeding nipples! Locations of baby friendly hospitals can be found here.

I love the Graco SnugRider Infant Car Seat Frame Stroller. On the 359 days of the year that Ohio’s weather is nasty, I don’t have to take our baby out of her car seat to put her in the stroller. I can just pop the car seat right into the stroller. It’s also very lightweight, easy to maneuver, and easy to collapse.

The Fisher-Price Newborn Rock ‘n Play Sleeper is the cradle of dreams! I love, love, love it. Our baby slept in it while in our room for the first month or two. She would happily sit in it while I was on facebook… I mean, while I did chores. My husband could get her to go to sleep by rocking back and forth. The best thing ever. Sell everything you own and buy this! And, when our baby was going to sleep in the Rock ‘n Play Sleeper, she loved, loved, loved, being swaddled in the Miracle Blanket. Let me tell you, this thing is miraculous. I’m incapable of swaddling with a blanket so that she couldn’t break out of the swaddle. With the Miracle Blanket, I could wrap her up in seconds and she would be snug as a bug all night.

Oh Baby Hawk, how I love you. Let me count the ways. Our Baby Hawk was the only thing that would calm our baby down when she was a newborn. The swing didn’t work, neither did the car seat or the stroller. But our Baby Hawk would do the trick without fail. We carry our baby in it when we are cooking (and by we, I mean my husband), at the grocery, on a walk. She loves it. With the Baby Hawk, we can carry her around without aching shoulders or back. The best part is that it allows her to be right up against our chest, which is pretty much her favorite place to be.

My other suggestions for postpartum moms? Spanx and coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.

Unencumbered

Saturday I had the best day.  The likes of which has not been experienced for a long time.  My very sweet husband told me on Thursday that I should take Saturday “off”.  He said I should go do whatever I wanted and even gave me a little budget to enable me.  I did not hesitate to say “YES!!!” and when Saturday morning came along, I got up and got ready.  I got the baby good and fed and pumped out two bottles for him. I kissed the kids and the hubs goodbye and headed out about 9:15.

My first stop was Panera, where (let’s just say I also took this day off from dieting!) I consumed a chocolate pastry and two cups of coffee and read a chapter in the book we ladies are studying at house church, called Changes that Heal.  We’re only two chapters in but so far I really recommend it.  Especially if you are a person who is having any kind of relationship troubles.

Then, I zoomed over to Learning Express, a really cool toy store I have been wanting to get to for a long time.  I hadn’t been there in forever.  Pretty much everything they sell has an educational value.  I picked up some fun things for the big kids.  I stayed a long time.  I could pretty much live there!

Next, I went next store to Marshall’s.  I had a gift card from Christmas burning a hole in my pocket, and I went straight to the  toy section and CLEANED UP!  I got so much stuff for $50, it was ridiculous!  I again just bought for the big kids.  Since both of their birthdays are pretty close to Christmas, I like to get some treats to give out throughout the year for special treats once in awhile.  I had a big smile on my face when I left, I got so many good deals!

It was about lunch time, and I had made plans to meet one of my favorite people, Cortney, for lunch at Ruby Tuesday’s.  We had some yummy food and talked for 90 minutes kid-free!!!! Woo-hoo!  It was awesome.

By this time it was close to 2 p.m. and I wanted to go see a movie at 3:55.  But, my bewbs were about to explode so I ran home to feed my little guy and kiss the big kids.  Then I jumped right back in the car and zoomed off again.  I went to the mall and scoped out some Lands’ End clearance at Sears.  I got Sophie a winter coat for the year after next for $14!! Woot!  After that, it was time to head over to the theater to see The King’s Speech.

I’ve been wanting to see this movie for weeks and I’ve heard so many great things about it.  I was a bit obsessed with the royals in junior high and early high school, so I knew all about the main characters but I had never heard this particular story.

It was riveting.  And inspiring!  And even though it was just me, a Coke, and a bag of Chewy SweetTarts (and a bunch of old people), I had the best time watching it.

After the movie, it was time to get back to reality.  But I was ready, and I felt refreshed and cheerful.  Also, my bewbs were REALLY wanting to see the baby at this point.  I went straight from the movie to meet the fam at church (I love Saturday night church!).  Of course, Jonah had just taken his second bottle right before church, so I was kinda outta luck on that front.  But I survived.

After church we headed home where I capped my “day off” by going to bed at 9 p.m.  It was wonderful!  I am so thankful that I got to spend a day truly relaxing.  Just free to run around town, totally unencumbered.  And then I still got to come home to the best family a girl could ever want.  It was a great day!!

My poor neglected third child

Despite Emily’s assertion that I’m spending more time on my kids, my poor little Jonah boy is seriously suffering from third-child syndrome.  We have taken, like, 12 pictures of him on actual camera since he was born.  We’ve got plenty of camera-phone pictures like this gem:

But no real ones!  It’s pretty sad, and I’ve GOT to get it taken care of right away!  But geez I don’t even have time to talk to Emily on the INTERNETZ much less photograph the baby.

So, I am really happy about this little thing we have now called the smartphone.  And it’s pal, the You Tube.  Because last night my hubby got this a-freaking-dorable video of Jonah finding his voice, and if a picture is worth a thousand words, I think this video is worth 1,001.  Enjoy!
