It’s not easy being Santa.

When I came home from work today, I found this on the kitchen counter.

Too bad that Mommy Claus hasn’t gotten a swimming puppy! I actually had one in my cart at Target last weekend, but I put it back because I didn’t think there was any way she actually wanted this thing.

I mean, look at it.

Looks fascinating, right?

So as I sat down at the computer tonight, I went looked for this thing and found it on ToysRUs.com. Of course, I looked at the user reviews.

Let’s just say that the swimming puppy doesn’t seem to be much of a hit with the moms and dads who’ve written the reviews.

In fact, here’s the first one I read:
“Should be called fall over and float while the legs move back and forth for 2 minutes until water creeps into the battery compartment and goes into the trash puppy.”

Needless to say, I am NOT thrilled by the thought of sinking (haha) $29.99 into it.

But, scroll up and look at that sweet letter to Santa.

So I ask you, what is a person to do in this situation? I am in a true quandary, and time is ticking away.

If any of you are proud owners of a Rescue Pets Swim to Me Puppy and would like to talk me into purchasing it, I am all scary eyes ears.

  1. Actually, I am in the same situation, but I have 2 girls that want it. They have asked santa for it at least 3 times. SOOOOO, I guess they are getting swimming puppies from grandma and grandpa. Good thing since I was not to excited to spend $60.00 on these things. I too read the reviews. Hope they are beeter that they sound. Good luck with what you decide.

  2. Em… Kate wants a REAL swimming puppy, not a TOY swimming puppy!!!! haha…

The Berry’s need a dog. Period. Think how much more exciting and interesting your life would be…!!!!

  3. Oh, yes, the swimming toys. We have one of the swimming dolls (think it’s a Zapf?) that Pinky saved her money to buy.

It works, but the thrill wore off pretty quickly as it didn’t work that well.

It’s tough, isn’t it? You want so much to say yes and see that squeal of HURRAY on Christmas morning…but you know just how disappointed they might be when the toy of their dreams turns out to be a dud.

I vote for the real puppy….HA!

  4. My Dear,
You are in the same boat that I am in. My daughter wanted a Baby Alive for Christmas. She is seven. This is the first year that she has asked for something and it be the same thing every time you ask her what she wants. I wasn’t thrilled with the reviews, but I just couldn’t say no. So we will see how well it holds up.

  5. We just found a stray dog ( actually I pulled over to make sure the thing running across Edwin C. Moses Blvd didn’t get itself run over , and it jumped into my car…so I guess a stray dog found us.) I am betting I can teach it to swim…just say the word and it is yours..FOR FREE! I’ll even deliver it dressed as Santa OR Mrs. Claus as a bonus, just to get rid of the dang thing…
A REAL LIVE SWIMMING DOG! (PINK SWEATER INCLUDED)

  6. That’s tough.. maybe find a well rated puppy toy of another sort with a letter from Santa explaining that he wouldn’t want her to be disappointed with the swimming puppy, so he got her a better one.. ??

  7. the letter is precious. I am a huge fan of customers review, but there comes a time when you just want to form your own opinion and if there were no reviews about it being unsafe, I say GO FOR IT. that letter is too precious (had to state it again)

  8. I was in your boat for my son’s fourth birthday last month. ALL he wanted was the Pixos art studio thing, and of course I ran out and bought it…with accessories and all around 40 bucks. He has played with it ONCE. Yeah, waste of money, but I think if they only ask for ONE thing that it’s still magical to them if they get it. Just my two cents!

  9. I so feel your pain. Last year, DD wanted a Fly pen (the one that can “read” what you’re writing on special paper). I caught a huge Catholic guilt trip for not getting her anything on her list, and ended up getting this for her Santa gift. What a waste of $100 (with accessories). My friends were making me feel horrible for not getting her at least 1 thing on her list.

  10. My nephew has one of these..and it does not swim…it treads water for a bit then kinda floats brefly before it sinks! I would not spend 30 dollars on it..there are lots of better toys available for the bath.

  11. I am going against the grain I guess, but I wouldn’t get it. Put the $30 towards something that is worth it. You’re already off the hook since she asked Santa. My kids never rememeber what they ask for once they get distracted by the cool things they did get.

  12. Oh the things we do for our kids… πŸ™‚ For me, it would depend on if you need another gift or not. And how easily you may be able to dispose of the thing after the novelty has worn off. πŸ˜‰
