In Which I Pretend to Be a Fun Mom

mommy sophie

I am going to try to make a long story a short-ish story: so here goes. Ever since I went on a little blog trip to the Lake Erie Shores & Islands area about 18 months ago, I’ve wanted to go back with my family. Finally, at the very end of summer (and even after school had started), we were able to get up there for a weekend for a hosted trip. That’s right, all our accommodations and event tickets were provided, but we paid for our wheels & meals.  All the opinions about our experiences are my own. I was super-excited to see Lake Erie (it was winter when I visited) and Bobby and I decided to be “fun parents” for a weekend and take our kids to Cedar Point! That’s right, an amusement park. With rides. And lines. And other people. We waited until the day before to tell the kids and they were SO EXCITED! The whole weekend was a blast, and we loved every minute of our trip. Here are some of the great family fun attractions we saw when we were there.

Friday night we headed to Ghostly Manor Thrill Center, a family entertainment center. I had visited here on my previous trip and really wanted to take the kids. They have a super-scary haunted house which we skipped, but they also have skating, glow-in-the-dark mini-golf, a huge bouncy house area, and a suuuuuper-fun XD theater!

On the skating rink, you could do either scooters, roller blades, or skates! Fun to have options for the little ones.

Jonah had an awesome time at the bouncy area, but I could not get any pics because he was a crazy animal running and bouncing everywhere! It was great fun and really wore him out! My favorite part was the XD theater. Sophie and I looooooved it and I could’ve spent way more time there. It was a blast!

If you are going to be in Sandusky, I highly recommend Ghostly Manor. It’s a whole lot of reasonably-priced family fun in one place.

When we were funned-out, we went to our lovely hotel accommodations at the Sawmill Creek Resort. This place is huge and beautiful! It has a golf course, a nature preserve, and beach access to Lake Erie. We loved our room – it even had a cozy fireplace and YES we did use it even in the summer! It was wonderful.

Happy place 🙂

As cozy as our room was, the kids were dying to get in the indoor pool! We had a lot of fun – and Sophie and I had some hot tub time, too! The facilities were super nice!

Of course Sawmill Creek has a gorgeous outdoor pool, too. We were just busy alll day when we were there, so we did our swimming at night both nights! Here’s a peek though.

My very favorite part of the Sawmill Creek Resort was the gorgeous beach at Lake Erie. We had so much fun – it was VERY windy but still a great afternoon at the beach. The wind did spoil our planned evening shoreline cruise though. 🙁 Too many whitecaps, said the captain!

It was really ever so beautiful. I was definitely struck with #LakeErieLove.

We traded the lake for the jungle…sort of…out next stop was the African Safari Wildlife Park. This is a park where you can drive thru and feed all kinds of wild animals from your car window. We’ve done something like this before in Virginia and the kids were so excited to experience it again. This park also had a great little zoo you could walk through, too! We were a little overwhelmed by how many animals there were to feed…we were literally stuck in an animal traffic jam a couple of times! Here are some scenes from our drive-thru feed-a-thon:

Our children kept getting scared and just GIVING the animals our feed cups…so we ran out of food pretty fast. OOPS! It was a really fun experience though!

Finally, the BIG, EXCITING, grande finale of our trip was the legendary amusement park, Cedar Point. Believe it or not, even though we are both lifelong Ohioans, neither Bobby nor I had EVER been! The kids were super-excited, although Joshua is a bit, ummm…timid, so we knew we probably weren’t going to be riding any of the big coasters. Kind of a bummer for mom and dad, but we will just have to make a return trip sans kids!

We had a lot of fun in the areas geared just for smaller kids. Jonah was not afraid to ride ANYTHING. He did awesome! He loved the Scrambler, the Matterhorn, and the bumper cars! We rode them all many, many times!

This was the “biggest” ride we could get Joshua on – the Pipescream. It was a BLAST! But he was too nervous to enjoy it, party pooper. His three-year-old brother and seven-ear-old sister, however, LOVED it. 🙂

We really had an awesome day at Cedar Point. The weather was awesome, the lines were short, and the rides were FUN! The kids did great and we will definitely be back.

We will also definitely be back to the Lake Erie Shores & Islands area. We really want to get out on the lake, and Bobby and I would like to take a grown-up trip there and explore the islands, too.

Thanks to Sawmill Creek Resort, Ghostly Manor, African Safari Wildlife Park, Cedar Point, and Lake Erie Shores and Islands for hosting us. We can’t wait to go back!

10 Hilarious Parenting Quotes From Famous People

The other day I was pondering parent witticisms and trying to remember a funny Erma Bombeck quote I’d once read. This pondering soon led me down the rabbit hole that is an internet search for funny parenting quotes. Thankfully, it was a really funny rabbit hole that was good for my mom soul. Here are 10 of the funniest quotes I found – I WISH I could’ve said these better myself, but alas, these people are funnier than me. In some cases, I’ve added my own commentary in bold.  Enjoy!

10hilariousquotes

“When my kids become wild and unruly I use a nice, safe playpen. When they’re finished, I climb out.” – Erma Bombeck

“All of us have moments in our lives that test our courage. Taking children into a house with a white carpet is one of them.” – Erma Bombeck

“Insanity is hereditary. You can catch it from your kids.” – Erma Bombeck (I really wish I could high-five Erma for this one!)

“Always end the name of your child with a vowel, so that when you yell the name will carry.” – Bill Cosby (I’m totes adding that to my list of child-naming rules, Bill!)

“In spite of the six thousand manuals on child raising in the bookstores, child raising is still a dark continent and no one really knows anything. You just need a lot of love and luck – and, of course, courage.” – Bill Cosby

“Having children is like living in a frat house – nobody sleeps, everything’s broken, and there’s a lot of throwing up.” – Ray Romano  (Ermgersh. Just call my house Pi Sigma Crappa.)

“Becoming a mom to me means that you have accepted that for the next sixteen years of your life, you will have a sticky purse.” – Nia Vardalos (That you will never, ever be able to find anything in.)

“Children aren’t happy without something to ignore, and that’s what parents were created for.” – Ogden Nash

“A two-year-old is kind of like having a blender, but you don’t have a top for it.” – Jerry Seinfeld (Or an off button.)

and finally…

“Raising kids is part joy and part guerrilla warfare.” – Ed Asner  (In that case I really, really, need a bulletproof vest!)

So, those are some of my favorite funny quotes inspired by the insanity that is raising children. Do you have any favorite quotes? I’d love to hear them in the comments!

Easy Gluten-Free Snack Ideas #LiveGfree

I am so excited about this post I can hardly contain myself! First, I should tell you it is sponsored by ALDI, but the gushing, excited, borderline geeky opinions are all my own. Last spring at Mom 2.0 I was chatting with one of my favorite ALDI reps and she told me a new gluten-free line was about to come out there. I was SO excited. Gluten-free goodies at an ALDI price? I practically got down on my knees and thanked the Lord right then and there. The day after I got back to Dayton I went to ALDI and BAM – there they were! This is an Instagram pic from my feed on May 5th – I bought ALL THE THINGS! This is only halfway through my trip!

And they were all amazing. I am serious, yo. So in the next few weeks I am going to tell you about ALL my favorites from the liveGfree line at ALDI. But today, we are going to start with easy snacks – very important for a gfree mama like me who likes to eat several smaller meals throughout the day AND for a certain 3-year-old boy who is gluten-free and likes to eat all the time ALWAYS. Here are a few of my easy faves featuring the liveGfree line and other great ALDI brand products.

ALDI LiveGfree Collage 2

A couple of these snack ideas will be featuring these amazingly delicious liveGfree baked chewy bars. I love them the most because they are free of the 8 common allergens (yay for dairy-free peeps!) and they are all natural – NO artificial anything! And you guys?? They are only $2.49 a box. TWOFORTYNINE!! I pay $5 a box for a similar product at other grocery stores. I’ve even had to order them online, especially when Jonah was dairy-free as well and I was desperate. And I really couldn’t afford that. So $2.49? AMAZING.

I will be featuring Very Berry and Caramel Apple today, but they also have a Cocoa Loco flavor that is basically the tastiest gluten-free snack every invented. More about that in a later post! Now onto the snacks! First, I went with one of my favorite fall snacks – the caramel apple.

SONY DSC

What you’ll need from ALDI (total of $7.77 – I bought a whole bag of apples, not just one!):

Apples (I wanted to get Granny Smith but Jonah prefers Gala )

BerryHill Caramel topping

I don’t think I need to tell you how to “make” this! Slice, pour, open – done!

SONY DSC

I made this while the kids were at school, and…I ate it immediately after I was done taking the photos. SO GOOD! What kid wouldn’t love this, too? Forget Pumpkin Spice, fall, I’ll take Caramel Apple over that any day!

Next up, I used the Very Berry baked chewy bar as the centerpiece for a super-fruity snack – this was Jonah’s favorite!

Products I used from ALDI (toto of $5.77 for all of this – which will make multiple servings, of course!):

Naturipe blueberries

MooTubes fruit-flavored yogurt

One of Jonah’s favorite pastimes is opening the refrigerator. I wish I was kidding! As soon as he got home from school yesterday, he went straight to the fridge. He saw this in there and had to have it. A perfect after-preschool snack!

He went for the blueberries first. 🙂

Jonah snacking

I can’t even tell you how handy these little liveGfree bars are to have around – throw one in your purse, stash a couple in the car – they are great for when you need a gluten-free snack!

Finally, I went for a gluten-free crunch snack that is sure to be a hit with EVERYONE – whether they eat #gfree or not! Also super-great for a party or get-together..

SONY DSC

What you’ll need from ALDI (which all together cost me less than $12! And I had enough left over to make this at least one more time. What a great price for a party appetizer!!):

liveGfree Multi-Grain crackers – Sea Salt (sosososososososooooo good.)

liveGfree pretzel sticks (love. Oh how I missed pretzels!)

Little Salad Bar hummus quartet (this is a request from hubby EVERY time I go to ALDI!)

Baby carrots

Little Salad Bar salsa (one of my absolute faves)

This makes an excellent anytime snack, too!

SONY DSC

Is anyone else feeling hungry? So good. I love the roasted red pepper hummus the most! But they are all delish. And I just LOVE the Sea Salt crackers…I really missed having crunchy snacks!

I can’t tell you how happy my budget is now that ALDI has this fabulous line of liveGfree products. As you can see from the first photo in this post, there are a LOT more than just snacks  – and I can’t wait to tell you about more of my favorites! AND I can’t even EXPRESS to you how happy this banner at the top of the ALDI website makes me!!
