Experiencing Experiences

A few months ago when I discovered Pinterest, I pinned a number of ideas for things to do over the summer. For example:

(Note to self: Buy a huge chalk board. And develop nice handwriting.)

And this:

That one is similar to what I attempted to create last year during the Advent season.

Anyway, I pinned those and a variety of other crafts and activities and thought they were fab ideas… and then we got busy with work and swim team and life and I didn’t do anything with them.

I remembered them today, and then promptly had an anxiety attack (I wish I was kidding) about whether or not Andy and I are exposing our kids to enough experiences and activities. This led to me to creating an excel spreadsheet in my head about what we had done this summer and what other things we should do – and what categories each of those would fall under (nature, travel, physical activity, etc.). What?!? You know I am a dork.

Anyway, I’m about to make my list and I need to know what to put on there.

So, what have you and your kids done this summer? What else do you have planned? What things do you wish you were going to do?

  1. I recently had something like that, but it dealt with spending “art” time with the kids. My solution was to rush to the library and check out “Kid’s art for Dummies” and read through it. Then stressing out because we don’t have the correct art supplies in our house. I made a list for Michael’s and am heading there tomorrow. I wish I were kidding too…I’m not.

  2. We’ve done the living room sleepover – fun, free and easy – right up my alley!
It really is exhausting when you work outside the home all day and then try to cram activities into the evenings and weekends! If you’re going to be too tired and tense to enjoy them then it seems best to chill out at home with a simple craft or board game…

  3. Well, for the most part, my kids have ignored me. Afterall, they are in their 20s and have their own lives. Shelby has been to every concert known to man, as well as a Camping Trip with Young Life Teens. And she’s now in the Bahamas on a Young Life trip! Donovan never lets me in on his life, and that just might be a good thing! He hangs out in his ‘batchelor pad”, goes to concerts, and comes to see me once in a while.

I, went to VA, Ohio, back to VA, nearly fell off the mountain, drove too much, spent too much money, saw a lot of OLD friends, and spent 4 days in Germantown and didn’t run into you!! What’s UP with that?

    UP

  4. we went to Boonshoft the other day and that was a huge hit!! Just be prepared to spend a crap load of time getting there due to traffic on 75- but it was worth it in the end. painting pottery? drive-in? i saw on tv today that people were “baking” cookies on the hood of their car since it’s so hot out……….just sayin’! 😉

  5. AS you know, I had the happiest childhood ever. And all I really remember about summers is running around the cul-de-sac with Erin, only coming in when the street was too hot and I needed to get shoes so my feet wouldn’t burn. (This is the one thing I really regret about living in the city, for my kids’ sake.) We stopped taking vacations when I was 11 and Charles went to college, so most of my vacations I don’t really remember a lot about. A trip to the Gtown pool with you & Annie was always a highlight of summer, or to the Englewood pool with my friend Kelly. I guess what I am saying is, don’t let it drive you too crazy. Your kids have two parents who love them, and love fun, so they will have a pretty magical childhood regardless of how many things you get checked off your list this summer.
