Kaizen, Baby! Or, what I learned at TWIN camp.

So as you may remember, Emily and I are not just cousins but we are also TWINs – members of the Toyota Women’s Influencer Network.  Membership in such an exclusive club has its benefits, one of which was that I spent a couple of days last week in Hermosa Beach, California last week as a guest of Toyota. Woot!  Check out the view from my hotel room:

room with a view, the Inn at Hermosa Beach

I know, RIGHT!?  It was awesome!  After checking in I was able to relax a while and then take a walk on the beach and THEN go to lunch at this cute little quiche place with Jill, and THEN go for another walk on the beach and gape at this terrific pier: Untitled

The event didn’t technically get started until Tuesday evening, when we were treated to a yummy and fun dinner and met some of out great hosts from Toyota.  I was lucky enough to sit with two awesome bloggy friends, Jen and the aforementioned Jill, and with our instant Toyota BFF, Sona.    The dinner was great and I immediately loved all the Toyota staff that came to just hang out with us and get to know us. It was an awesome evening! Here are some gratuitous self-portraits of Jen and Jill and I, and a picture of Sona and I from the following day.

Sona Moon from Toyota, a rockstar working mom of a 19-month-old girl, who was so lovely I wanted to take her home in my suitcase. And not in a creepy way, just because you know, she's nice to be around. And because we could wear our matching green dresses and be twinsies and that would be awesome!*ahem*

Wednesday we headed out bright and early to Toyota’s campus in Torrance for a day of drinking the kool-aid learning about Toyota as a company. Because I am a nerd, the morning session where we learned about Toyota’s company pillars was my favorite.  Everyone who spoke to us from Toyota had been with the company a looong time. Five years was the least amount of time and after that, it was 10+.  Most were there much longer. Very impressive, especially since most of the folks who spoke to us were women and moms.  Toyota’s company pillars are 1) Respect for People and 2) Continuous Improvement (the Japanese word for this is “Kaizen”, pronounced Ky-zen).  These pillars really struck me as so simple and awesome!  Respect people and keep improving. Boom!  Love it!

Next, we learned about the philanthropic efforts that Toyota does within the community – which were SO awesome, that I am going to save them for their very own post. So stay tuned, I am sure you will be impressed, as I was.

Another fun thing we did that morning was participate in a discussion about what makes a car buying experience good or bad – our most and least favorite thing about the process.  I was impressed by how the Toyota team really listened to what we had to say, wrote down all out feedback, and participated in and encouraged a lively dialogue with all of us.  They were on the edge of their seats, really wanting to get raw feedback from us – very cool!

This led right into the most fun part of the day – taking some Toyotas for a spin!  We got the chance to drive some brand-new Toyotas!  There were lots of Hybrids and I was dying to drive one. I really wanted to drive the Highlander Hybrid and I was able to!   I also wanted to drive the new Sienna to compare it with my 2004 Sienna. I went driving with some VERY cool girls – Jill and Jen (the old standbys) and a new friend, Jeannett of Life Rearranged, who is totally fabulous.  You should all go check her out, even though she doesn’t technically need you to, because she is already famous and fabulous in the bloggy world.  Do it for yourself!  Jeannett, who is about to pop out kid #4, is very anti-minivan, so I was trying to win her over to the Sienna.

Emily will be disappointed if I do not include as many pictures of myself as possible in this post, so here is one of me and Jeannett. You're welcome!

Ok, so first up: the Sienna. Siennas make me HAPPY!

Untitled
Siennas make ME happy, and I in turn make JEN happy.

The 2012 Sienna was totally awesome. I KNEW it was going to be! However, my 2004 is fully-loaded and super-BA, so there were just a couple new things that really stood out to me that I’d like to have.  One is that GIANT DVD screen at the bottom left of this picture below.  That thing is so huge that Jeannett and I gasped when we opened it up.  I mean, DANG!  And you can do split-screen on it so that your children can watch different things!  The van also has the capability to even plug your Wii into it so you could bring that along on a road trip. Amazing!!

The other feature that was super-cool is the removable middle seat in the 2nd row. (See Jill beaming at the middle seat?)   This makes the Sienna an 8-passenger instead of a 7-passenger, and if you don’t need it, it’s very easy to remove so there’s no problem getting in and out of the back seat.  And of course the 2012 Sienna has all the features I love about my 2004 – power doors, navigation, all that cool stuff – just much shinier and newer!  AND it has USB ports for all our fancy smarphones and devices!

Untitled

The next vehicle I drove and LOVED was the Highlander Hybrid. We neeeeeeeeeed this car to replace Bobby’s old 1992 Camry station wagon! It’s the closest thing Toyota makes to that old faithful car. I LOVED the Highlander because a third row of seating is STANDARD on it! And the Hybrid engine – what a bonus for great gas mileage!! It has tons of power, too. I hit the gas to see how it would accelerate and it was awesome. Plus, it was a really smooth ride and it looks COOL inside & out. The third row is really, really, easy to put up & down when you don’t need as many passengers and want more trunk space. I seriously wish I could have taken this vehicle home with me. It is really they type that my family needs right now! And it’s smokin’ hot!

Untitled

It had plenty of fancy bells & whistles as well – navigation, USB ports, and gorgeous styling.  *sigh* I miss it already!

After lunch and a little more education, we made it over to the Toyota Museum for a quick stop.  I loved this because I am a huge Toyota nerd and they had pretty much every car they ever made. (Except my 1987 Camry wagon, sad face.)  Jill and I were inspired by some of the advertising to re-create the old Toyota “I love what you do for me” commercial from our youth.  Check out that SWEET AIR we got! As you can see,  my Lands’ End pants were comfy enough to do the “Toyota Jump for Joy” in!

Don't be jealous of our sweet jumping skillz
Two nerds in a pod...

Finally, we had time to change real quick to get ready for a fancy dinner and another feedback session with Toyota. This time they wanted to hear what we had to say about the event itself. One piece of feedback that I didn’t give at the session because I didn’t think of it at the time, is that Toyota and the Clever Girls Collective did a great job of choosing a variety of women to be in the TWIN group. It was not just a bunch of moms, there were also plenty of lovely single women. And there were a wide variety of ages represented as well from 23 to 50ish. Here’s the cute little Lindsay of LinzLovesYou, my favorite young’un in the group. She is a doll! And super-talented, if you need a new blog design, hit her up!

Untitled
Remember when you were 23? Me neither.

In the “small-world” category, I also got to meet Glennia Campbell who stunned me by announcing she is from the teeny Ohio town where Emily lives and where my own parents are from! Crazeee! She rules Palo Alto now, and is a world-traveler and lawyer at Stanford (no big deal, just STANFORD) but I can’t wait to meet up with her the next time she’s in our neck of the woods to visit her folks. I forgot to get my picture with her (so dumb!) But go check out her blog!

Well, that’s a wrap on my TWIN camp experience for now – thanks Toyota for being amazing hosts!  Can’t wait to share more about the Toyota Way in my next few posts.   Sorry there were only TEN pictures of me in it, I’ll do better next time, I swear!

Cars & Clothes

I had an amazing time in L.A. with the Toyota Women’s Influencers Network this week!  But I just got home last night at 7:00 pm and I haven’t been able to really process all of the great things I learned & experienced there yet, SO – I’m going to tell you about that next week.  What I can process for you now, is of course, MY CLOTHES!! Because my clothes were really simple, yet beautiful – a perfect way to describe their maker, Lands’ End.

You see, we were supposed to wear “business casual” to Toyota’s campus, and since I’ve been staying at home for four years, I no longer own A SINGLE PAIR of business casual pants (that fit, anyway).  So, I asked my pals at Lands’ End to help me out.  Please enjoy this very generous paraphrase of our conversation:

“Hey  I am going to wear all Lands’ End at this event because I love you guys, and I want to shill for you 24/7, but I have no pants, and since pantsless is generally not considered biz casual, would you send me a pair to review?  I already have the rest of my outfit put together.”  And they were all, “SURE! We’d love to!”  Because they are awesome.  And then they were like, “Do you need anything else?”  and because I am a total whore, I said, “Well I could use a casual-er dress.  I am going to wear one of my Mom 2.0 dresses but the others are a little too fancy I think.”  And they were all, “No problem!”  And THEN they were all, “Oh whoopsie, we are out of the color dress you wanted, so we just sent you TWO dresses, hope one of them works out.”  Seriously!! Lands’ End is amazing!

BOTH dresses ended up fitting, and I already had Lands’ End shoes and everything else I needed to make the outfits work.  So, here’s my fabulous Lands’ End wardrobe for the Toyota Women event:

violetdress
Women's Embroidered Bodice Dress

This dress is what I wore Tuesday night for our opening dinner. It felt SO great on.  And the embroidery is just gorgeous.  It has POCKETS, which I loved.  The color is a really violet-y blue that you honestly don’t see much, so that in addition to the embroidery really set it apart.  This dress is so versatile, it would definitely go from the office to church to a picnic.  It was perfect for our California casual dinner, too.  I got so many compliments on it!  I wish I had gotten a better picture, I tried to have my friend Jen take one, but it was super-windy out and my skirt was up around my ears and no one needs to SEE THAT!  It really is just a beautiful, comfortable dress.

On Wednesday, for our day at Toyota’s campus, I wore the pants that started it all – the Women’s Fit 1 Stretch Crop Chinos.  I adore these pants!  So comfortable, very chic, they work great with heels or flats and can definitely take you just about anywhere you need to go in 24 hours (maybe not the gym – but who wants to go there anyways!?)  Here’s how I put my outfit together:
jenny nerd

I realize I look like a total nerd in this picture, but I thought it showed my outfit so well, I’m taking one for the team (thanks again to Jenbshaw for capturing mynerd-ity.  She was just taking random pictures of me because I am THAT magnetic, apparently.)  Here’s a less nerdy one also. But wait til my actual Toyota post and you will see Jill and I go FULL NERD.  Anticipation!!

Me w/ a Lexus at the Toyota Museum. Because my husband is a Lexus guy!

So, shockingly, most of this outfit I ALREADY OWNED. I know, crazy right? Well about 95% of my wardrobe is Lands’ End. Most days you will find me in it from head to toe. So this is why I love working with them. I put my $$ where my mouth is on a regular basis! This cream tank top I have on is actually from Lands’ End’s Lands’ End Canvas line, and I got it for Mother’s Day from my hubby!  It has little anchors on it and is tres cute.  The cardigan I wore at Mom 2.0, and the scarf I’ve had for about three years.  The Gatas Canvas shoes, which are AMAZINGLY comfortable, I also got for Mom 2.0.  We were supposed to wear shoes that we could drive in, because we got to drive some cool cars, and these were perf!  And Bedorbs!  (Two of my new fave abbreviations.  Abbrev. ev. right Jill?)

On to Tuesday night!  This was a little bit of a fancier dinner, but still casual-ish, however once again Lands’ End had the perfect dress that could work at a picnic or a theatre performance. And I loooooooooooooove it.  And it’s only $55. Hurry and go buy one!!

Women's Knit Pieced Sundress

You guys, this dress is so comfortable I considered just wearing it to sleep after we got back from dinner. NOT KIDDING! And it has pockets, also, which were wonderful for my cell phone and hotel key. And it is VERY forgiving, no shapewear required! The fabric is actually a very heavy weight and hangs beautifully. You all want this one, girls. Seeeeriously. Jen, (who at, FOUR MENTIONS in this post is probably getting on your nerves right now, right?) was plotting to steal it from me so deviously, I am kind of surprised it made it home with me!

Two of my favorite bloggers who made my time at Toyota awesome, Jill and Jen! Jen tried to steal my dress.

Well, that’s a wrap on my outfits. They were wonderful, and so is Lands’ End, who of course is not paying me to say this, but totes gave me the two dresses and the magic pants to review. Thanks LE, you made my time at Toyota that much more special because I felt like a million bucks in my clothes!

THAT’S Lands’ End? Mom 2.0, part 2

As you know, Emily and I were sponsored to Mom 2.0 Summit by our favorite company to work with EVER, Lands’ End.  Let me tell you how we felt like rock stars in these beautiful outfits. Over and over and OVER again we heard two things from attendees at the conference. Number one was: “THAT’S Lands’ End???” in a shocked voice, and number two was: “I am going to have to take a look at Lands’ End now! You make me want to shop them!”  I am not even kind of exaggerating when I say we heard that numerous times.  Of course, those remarks were always preceded with, “I love your dress!”  Emily and I were posting pictures of our outfits on Facebook this weekend, but now we want to include photos along with some of our favorite features of them as well.

For travel, I went with my favorite – classic Starfish Collection comfort:

It was blissfully comfy and oh-so-adorable!  I have on the Starfish tunic, striped scarf, and cropped leggings, which you can’t see, but they are adorbs (that’s how we cool kids say “adorable” these days) and I want to marry them.  (Sorry, honey.) Also, I carried this gorgeous linen and leather handbag.  It was big enough to be my carry-on on the plane, and it held my prized possessions – my iPad, my breast pump, and my makeup bag with room to spare!  It has all kinds of pockets, a detachable wristlet, and even a place for your business cards. It’s pretty much the perfect bag!

We neglected to get a photo of Emily in her traveling gear, whoopsie!  But she was also looking splendid in these pincord pants, matching drapeneck tee, and pointelle cardigan:

She had these shoes (pictured) on as well and they were so cute!  I wanted to steal them!

(Emily jumping in here – I loved this outfit so much! It was super comfortable and I know I’ll probably wear it about once a week for the rest of the summer. The shoes were SO cute, and comfortable as well.)

When we got to the hotel, we immediately changed for the much-anticipated WHITE PARTY!!! We were both just soooo over the moon about our white linen dresses.

whiteparty

I loved my dress because it was so comfortable.  The pleating on the bodice was a fantastic detail that really made the dress stand out. I felt great in it and very beachy.  Emily’s halter was actually from the Lands’ End Canvas line (which you should totally check out if you’re not familiar with it!)  Hers had pockets, too, which was so convenient.  We felt amazing and confident in our white! (I was kinda bummed though, that Emily’s spray tan turned out so good. Dangit! My creamsicle dreams were totally melted.)

Friday’s dresses were my personal favorite.  Em and I were both all decked out in linen.  I must tell you – these linen dresses are gorgeous, the colors are SO vibrant, and they fit like a DREAM!  This green portrait collar dress made me feel like I was straight out of the offices of  “Mad Men”.

Here’s a look with my gorgeous Kinzie Linen Tote. The freshwater endless strand pearls are Lands’ End as well!

I really felt super-glamorous in this portrait collar dress.  (And the shoes are great, too! More on those later.)  Everywhere I went that day, people stopped me to tell me how much they loved it, especially the color (which is called “Asparagus”.)  By the end of the day, Emily and I were saying, “Asparagus is the new black!”  Everyone loved it!

Emily’s v-neck linen dress was equally beautiful.  And check out her striped handbag!  I was soooo jealous of it! (I know, my greed for Lands’ End cannot be satiated. It’s a DISEASE!)

(Emily here again – this was one of my favorite dresses too. I just loved both the fit and the cut. I am also slightly obsessed with that handbag.)

DSC07811

Something we both loved about these dresses is that they have little snaps inside the shoulders that hold your bra straps in place!  Genius!!  And again, I cannot emphasize enough how amazingly well they fit & flattered!  The backs of these dresses were also so pretty and lucky for us, the Mom 2.0 official photographer caught that detail!

IMG_2985
Friday night the party was a little more casual and Emily and I chose dresses that were super fun and comfortable.  Once again I was jealous of Emily’s dress. Seriously I could easily own one of everything!

Print dress

Don’t you love this bold print?  And the belt was such a great touch. This dress also had pockets, FTW!  And I know it’s kind of hard to see but she was wearing these shoes, which are sooooooo cute – I wore the same ones in white to the white party. Hers were orange and I LOVE them (orange is my favorite color. If we wore the same shoe size I totes would’ve ganked ’em.)

I chose a cotton modal print dress.  This was without a doubt one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing I have EVER worn.  It traveled SO well too,  I did not have to do anything but pull it out of my suitcase and put it on!  And I loved the print, but it also comes in lots of great solids.  The matching espadrilles were the icing on the cake!

cotton modal print

Saturday at the conference found me back in linen again and Emily in this great v-neck chambray dress.  Her “sherbert frock” as one conference attendee called it, was much-coveted!  And isn’t her necklace gorgeous? I wore the same one later that night.

I loved the way my shirred linen pattern dress fit. The shirring on the top is hard to see in the photo but you’ll see it later when Em rocks a solid color.  Once again, Emily and I both got tons of compliments on these dresses!  Despite the fact that it is linen, I didn’t have to iron this one out of my suitcase, either. I couldn’t believe it!  The ultra-fashionable Nicole of Momtrends loved our dresses so much, she included us in her fashion wrap-up!  We were so honored!

photo courtesy of Nicole Feliciano of Momtrends

Finally, we were SO excited to get our looks together for the big closing party of the conference, at the VERSACE MANSION!!! We were both feeling very glamorous in RED – me in red butterflies, Emily in red linen with the shirring detail on top.

butterflies

This dress was soooo FUN!  I adoooore the print.  It was ultra-comfy, and had pockets and the snaps to hold my bra straps in place.  I felt super-fabulous in the bold print and color.  I honestly felt like I fit right in at the Versace mansion!  And check out my gorgeous and comfy Elizabeth buckle sandals.

Emily’s shirred linen dress was super RED hot.  Look how beautiful she looks! The shirring on the top is so elegant, and it fit like a glove.

red linen

She had cute linen & red matching espadrilles, too! We both carried the Kinzie linen tote in red to complete our looks for the party. We got some great photos in these dresses!

two red girls

Like this one, and of course, again for your enjoyment, the soon-to-be-legendary shot of us in Versace’s shower!  Lands’ End REALLY infiltrated the Versace mansion in this one!

Untitled

I can’t tell you how much we LOVED every minute of wearing these amazing pieces of clothing.  We couldn’t have been any more proud to be representing Lands’ End – the brand that truly took us from the conference room to the beach to the Versace mansion!  We hope you’ll head to their website, get your shop on, and show them some love!

Which one of our looks was YOUR favorite?
